Mississippi is no stranger to sweltering summer temperatures. It seems that each year brings temperatures that creep a bit higher than the previous year’s. Whether you spend most of your days indoors or outside, the impact of the heat will meet you wherever you are. Below are five ways to ensure you stay cool as the temperatures rise.

    Stay Hydrated

Drinking water is key to a healthy lifestyle, in general; however, its benefits are even more significant during the summer months. Although the exact amount of water suitable for you depends on your body (weight, height, health, etc.), ideally, you’ll want to drink at least eight to twelve cups per day. However, living in a hot, humid climate, like Mississippi, means that we can (and should) safely increase our daily intake.

Stay Up to Date With Your Doctors Appointments

When was the last time you had a check up? If you haven’t been lately, it is time to call your primary care physician to schedule an appointment. Ensure that you complete all labs and schedule any specialist visits. Staying on top of your health, especially during extreme heat, is paramount for your overall well being. Thankfully, Mississippi is full of wonderful clinics that can provide you with the ultimate care.

    Pay Attention to Your Body

Are you feeling dizzy? Do you feel light headed when you’re outside for too long? Is it hard to gain your balance after standing when you’re hot? These are not good signs and may be indications that something is wrong. While we all may experience a glitch in our bodies, it is critical to pay special attention to all aspects of our health as the temperatures increase. Even if your symptoms end up being nothing to worry about, it is far better to be safe than sorry. Additionally, do not hesitate to ask additional questions about your symptoms and get second answers. If your symptoms feel particularly strange or if they persist, get a second opinion. Paying attention to your body can save your life.

    Keep an ice pack handy

Ice packs come in handy this time of year. Whether you are indoors or outdoors (but especially outdoors), an ice pack can help regulate your body temperature by quickly cooling you down. If you experience heat-related headaches, ice packs may alleviate them. You can purchase an ice pack at your local supermarket or hardware store. No matter what city or town you reside in, there’s always a store nearby that carries ice packs. If you’re looking to DIY it, use a ziplock bag, a few cubes of ice, and cover it with a towel. And voilà — you’ve just made your own homemade ice pack!

    Wear Light-Colored, Loose-Fitted Clothing

Your summer outfits should be designed to keep you cool and comfortable. Prioritize breathable, lightweight fabrics like linen and seeksucker. Thankfully, Mis

sissippi is lined with countless shopping centers and locally owned boutiques to shop for your safe summer clothing.

    Mississippi Summer Survival Recap

Beating the heat doesn’t have to be complicated. By prioritizing these five tips, you’ll breeze through these next few months without being scorched. Let us know how you plan to stay safe this summer in the comment section of Our Mississippi Home’s Facebook page!
