Belhaven University is celebrating two prestigious awards from the U.S. News & World Report 2025 Best Online Programs. The University received recognition in both the Best Online Bachelor’s Programs and the Best Online Bachelor’s Programs for Veterans categories.

A couple of years ago (well, November of 2022, to be exact), I wrote a column about Martin Hegwood winning the Faulkner Award for his then unpublished novel, Memphis. The Faulkner is one of the most prestigious and highly contested writing competitions in the United States, so that accomplishment made us all “Pascagoula Proud” of our native son.

Hope Unbridled Equestrian Program in Tupelo, Mississippi, aims to bring therapeutic equine programs to differently abled individuals by providing individualized equine and therapeutic riding activities. Founder and director Sherry Jenkins advocates for the benefits of therapeutic equine programs because they have helped her daughter and family the most. 

I live just a few blocks from Desporte’s Seafood shop, a family business that has been around for generations, and I go there as often as I can. I love fresh seafood, but crab has to be my favorite, especially well-made crab cakes. What do I mean by well made? Simple, cakes that have a minimum of breadcrumbs and are reasonable seasoned.

After Thanksgiving, Super Bowl Sunday is the second-biggest food consumption day in the United States. According to a study from LetsGetChecked, the average American will consume about 11,000 calories on Super Bowl Sunday, more than five times the recommended daily calorie intake for the average person. Pizza, wings, chips, and beer can add up to a week’s worth of saturated fat in one evening! Remember, diets high in saturated fats are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music continues its 2024-25 Connoisseurs Series, offering performances by world-class guest artists for the community. On January 23 at 7:30 p.m., Tommy Mesa, cello, and Yoon Lee, piano, will take to the stage at Marsh Auditorium on the university’s Hattiesburg campus, in a program of diverse offerings, including classical staples and new music. Thanks to the Mr. and Mrs. James Simrall, Jr. Arts Endowment, the concerts are presented at no charge to the public.

I saw a Food Network photo of an Italian sub the other day and I just can’t get it out of my mind. It has become a craving. I only know of two restaurants that serve a good sub and that’s Sicilian II and the Italian Terrace. Both are a good drive from my house, so the next best option is to make one myself.

Vicksburg, Mississippi is a beautiful city with a rich, profound history. It was founded in 1811 and became incorporated on January 29, 1825. This year, starting January 29, 2025, Vicksburg will kick off the celebration of its 200th anniversary of becoming incorporated. The celebration will be year long and will focus on five core concepts. 

The Mu Gamma Lambda and Mu Xi chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host the 19th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Ecumenical and Scholarship Prayer Breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, in the Thad Cochran Center ballrooms at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus. Admission is free and members of the university and local communities are invited to attend.
