Little “q” Ranch Quail Hunting Preserve: A Mississippi Gem

Little “q” Ranch Quail Hunting Preserve is definitely a Mississippi gem, a great place to enjoy some of Mississippi’s oldest outdoor traditions.

And now that many Mississippi outdoorsmen are slightly depressed and mourning the end of deer season, this is the perfect time to get acquainted with Little “q” Ranch.

Located outside of Oxford, Mississippi, Little “q” offers individuals and groups the opportunity to experience guided quail and pheasant hunts safely – and successfully. With modern amenities and onsite lodging, Little “q” is the perfect hunting adventure for novice and seasoned sportsmen alike.

Beware though! It’s not a one-and-done adventure; Little “q” Ranch is the kind of place that keeps you coming back for more.

Just ask one of our grands, Maddox, who just enjoyed his second Little “q” adventure on a guided hunt led by Aaron Barton of Barton Outfitters (bartonoutfitters.com). Barton is only one of a dozen or so guides who work to help guests of the ranch have the absolute best upland wingshooting experiences ever.

Through a Christmas gift card purchased online from Little “q,” Maddox spent a bright, crisp winter morning impressively bagging his share of pheasants alongside one of the ranch’s Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. That sight alone is worth the trip, to see the precision and beauty with which these dogs work.

A lifelong Mississippian, Josh Qoung is the owner of Little “q,” and his hospitality and love for the preserve are obvious. In this recent family adventure at Litte “q,” Quong shared how the preserve began and what he hopes to provide through its services.

A Mississippi educator, Quong never set out to build a shooting preserve. Instead, he asked another educator, Col. Orville Robertson (a retired ROTC instructor, to be exact), to ride with him to look at some land for sale near Oxford. The colonel loved the land and suggested it would be the perfect spot for a shooting preserve.

Quong had no idea what a shooting preserve was, so he researched for about a year before he and his wife purchased and moved to Little “q” in May of 2009, with the preserve’s first hunt taking place in October of that same year.

For over 15 years now, Little “q” has hosted hunters from all over the country, and those hunts were memory-making adventures. More than that, Quong’s objective for each hunt is that his shooting preserve will be a portal back in time, taking guests back to the old-school Southern outdoor traditions, back to joyful childhood memories of hunting and fishing with friends and family.

This latest pheasant hunt was truly a joyful family experience for Maddox, a time he will never forget. In fact, he is already planning a future trip – hopefully, with some of his friends along to experience Little “q” for themselves.

So, make sure to sit down with a few of your own buddies and family members to check out the various hunting and outdoor packages that Little “q” offers to its quests. They even provide guided fishing excursions, as well as “Blast and Cast” classes to help guests learn or hone safe shotgun and fly-casting skills. And the ranch’s Tin Can Lodge is not just for hunters. It’s a great place to reserve for family or small group lodging.

Truly, there’s something for everyone at Little “q” Ranch Quail Hunting Preserve.
