From the dust of the riverside sawmills to highway and interstate traffic and life and industrial development along the shoreline, the 125-year history of Moss Point has been filled with natural and man-made events that has shaped the city and its people.

Current Moss Point Mayor, Billy Knight, is proud to serve the city during this historic time and is reflecting on the city’s past, present and future. Knight has been mayor since 2021 and is in his second term. He has lived in Moss Point since 1968 but is a lifelong resident of Mississippi.
“In Moss Point, celebrating a 125th anniversary—a Quasquicentennial—is a powerful moment for the community to reflect on our past, present, and future,” Mayor Knight said. “For a city known as ‘The River City,’ this milestone bridges its industrial roots with its modern resilience and fosters a hope that encompasses a bright future of economic development and tourism.”

Situated in the lower half of Jackson County, Moss Point is a thoroughfare for Interstate 10 with direct routes from Highways 63 and 613 traveling parallel through the city limits. It is also home to rail and water transportation and serves as a gateway to coastal Jackson County.
Moss Point, Mississippi, was incorporated as a city in 1901 less than 85 years after statehood was granted by in 1817. The region was originally home to the Mohocti Indians and was named after the moss-covered oaks in the area. European Settlers began to arrive in the 16th century, and the area was the first city to be incorporated before first being chartered as a village or town. It is also home to more than 30 historic structures.

To celebrate this monumental birthday, the city and the Parks and Recreation Department will host a special two-day edition of the annual River Jamboree May 1 and 2. The mayor said the festival will celebrate the city’s history with music, dance, art, exhibits and a reception. Weekend entertainment will include Moss Point Idol competition, a tribute to veterans. Historic reflections, a tour of historic homes, and more.
“This is an event that promises fun for all ages and memories to last a lifetime,” Mayor Knight said. “What we really want is for citizens to mark their calendars and begin to invite family and friends, those near and far, to ‘The River City’s Grand Anniversary Celebration.’”

Current and past residents are asked to get involved with the planning or by offering sponsorships or historical photos and artifacts. The Moss Point Library is leading the charge of collecting memorabilia. For more information, contact [email protected].
Mayor Knight is also welcoming new visitors to the city, and said there is only one good way to describe this historic city.
“Moss Point is a quaint, historic river city where deep traditions and Southern hospitality meet the natural beauty of the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” he said.
A full schedule of events will be posted on the city’s social media pages.
