Long Weekends and Last Sunsets: Celebrating Labor Day in Mississippi

Labor Day weekend has always felt like Mississippi’s grand finale of summer—a few last golden days before the light changes and football season takes over our weekends. Here in the Magnolia State, we know how to stretch a holiday into a memory, and Labor Day is one of our favorite excuses to do just that.

If you’re headed south, the Gulf Coast is the place to be. There’s just something about that salt breeze and the rhythm of the waves that makes time slow down. Spend the day with your toes in the sand at Gulfport or Pass Christian, then wander into Old Town Bay St. Louis for live music, local art, and the kind of boutique shopping that somehow feels like a treasure hunt. Biloxi will be buzzing with concerts, shows, and more seafood than you can dream of—because here, shrimp season is always worth celebrating.

If you prefer your weekend with a little history and a lot of charm, Natchez is calling. The bluff-top views over the Mississippi River never get old, and wandering the shaded streets lined with historic homes is a gentle reminder that beauty can be both grand and unhurried. You can drive the Great River Road, stop for a picnic, and watch riverboats drift by like they’ve done for more than a century.

For those who want to lace up their hiking shoes, the Hill Country is waiting. Tishomingo State Park’s rocky trails and suspension bridge make it a photographer’s dream, and the cooler evenings of early September are perfect for a campfire under the stars. Or head into the Delta, where blues music pours from front porches and juke joints, and the B.B. King Museum tells stories that stay with you long after the weekend ends.

And of course, we can’t forget the food. Labor Day here is full of backyard grills, church fish fries, and tables spread with peach cobbler, deviled eggs, and platters of just-caught Gulf shrimp. No matter where you go, you’ll find a plate, a smile, and probably a story to go with it.

So pack your cooler, charge your camera, and make the most of this long weekend. Whether it’s the shimmer of the coast, the heartbeat of the Delta, or the quiet beauty of a Mississippi sunset, Labor Day here is more than just a holiday—it’s a love letter to summer.
