“To understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi.” We all know this quote, allegedly said by William Faulkner, and no matter who said it, we can all agree that it’s true.

Somewhere in Mississippi, there is a creative and clever native who understands the ins and outs of the Hospitality State. This individual has created a social media presence that spotlights all aspects of Mississippi.

If you’ve ever scrolled Facebook, chances are you’ve encountered an account called “Mississippi Department of Memes.” This account is dedicated to making Mississippians laugh daily by making light of the good, the bad, and the ugly about The Magnolia State.

The page’s owner and creator wish to remain anonymous; only Our Mississippi Home knows who they are. However, integrity in journalism matters, so they will remain anonymous. Nevertheless, the creator is well known, and most people would be surprised to know who they are.

In 2018, the Mississippi Department of Memes creator noticed that some states had a “Department of Memes” page dedicated to their respective states.

“I looked and looked and realized Mississippi didn’t have one, so I thought I’m going to make one,” the creator said.

Mississippi Department of Memes began in July 2018 and has been bringing smiles to people’s faces for seven years. It is the original “Department of Memes” page for the state of Mississippi and is the largest state meme page in the United States. With 369k followers, Mississippians are guaranteed at least one laugh a day, and it’s all because of the creator’s sense of humor and down-to-earth honesty.

“My goal was to make people laugh and have a page dedicated to Mississippi,” the creator shared. “We have to laugh at ourselves sometimes. I love Mississippi, and we have some wonderful people here that deserve to be celebrated. But you know…we also have to celebrate the people they put on the news after a tornado, too.”

Two siblings run the page, which has millions of views and is guaranteed to make viewers smile. Some of the Mississippi Department of Memes’ most popular memes have been centered around O Brother Where Art Thou, a popular movie filmed in several Mississippi locations, such as Yazoo City, Jackson, Vicksburg, Canton, and Natchez.

Viewers don’t need to know the mastermind behind the Mississippi Department of Memes; as long as this individual continues to use humor and creativity to bring humor to our days, that’s all that matters. And they are right…. It’s okay to laugh at ourselves sometimes. We know our strengths and weaknesses, and we know the quirks of our individual towns and state culture–it’s part of what makes us who we are. Embracing the laughable is healthy. Missisisppians are naturally strong and creative, and the creator of Missisisppis Department of Memes is no different.

So, who is the creator behind the Mississippi Department of Memes? Well, we can’t tell you that. We can only tell you to visit the page and have a laugh or two today.
