In the heart of Yalobusha County, where small-town charm meets Southern celebration, Water Valley is gearing up once again for one of Mississippi’s most beloved summer traditions—the Watermelon Carnival, now in its 51st year. Always set for the first Friday and Saturday in August, this iconic event transforms historic Main Street into a lively festival that draws an estimated 20,000 visitors annually.

Recognized by the Southeastern Tourism Society as one of the Top 20 Festivals in the Southeast, the Watermelon Carnival is far more than a street fair—it’s a deep-rooted community tradition that began back in 1931. During the tough days of the Great Depression, local Water Valley businessmen were determined to lift the spirits of their neighbors. Their answer? A carnival centered around the most joyful fruit of the season—the watermelon.
That first celebration included a parade, a queen’s pageant, and a formal ball. The event continued for nine vibrant years until World War II forced its pause. In 1980, the Carnival was revived with renewed enthusiasm—and has only grown since.

Today, the festival is a two-day celebration packed with live music, a 5K and 10K run, an expansive craft and vendor market, pancake breakfast, car show, games, raffles, and of course, plenty of juicy, locally grown watermelon. The traditional Festival Queen Contest still crowns one lucky young lady, honoring the original spirit of the event. Saturday’s grand parade marches right through Main Street, followed by a dazzling fireworks display that lights up the Mississippi night sky.

There’s something for everyone—whether you’re strolling through craft booths, tapping your feet to live music, cheering runners at the finish line, or enjoying a picnic in the designated areas. Families will appreciate the free parking, clean restrooms, and easy access throughout the event.
This year’s carnival promises the same sweet sense of community and nostalgia, served up with slices of watermelon and smiles that stretch across generations. So, mark your calendars and head to Water Valley, Mississippi on August 2–3. It’s not just a carnival—it’s a celebration of resilience, history, and the simple joy of summertime in the South.
