A free concert series at Riverfront Park is bringing residents together while supporting downtown businesses and encouraging community activity through live music.
The seven-concert series runs through Oct. 31 and is free and open to all ages. The series is a partnership among the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, Moss Point Main Street and the Levitt AMP Music Series.
Julian Rankin, strategic adviser for the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, said Riverfront Park allows the concerts to become more than live music.
“Moss Point has this amazing venue at Riverfront Park, and that’s what the Levitt series is about. It’s about activating public places through free live music,” Rankin said.
The series opened Aug. 22, with hundreds attending the first concert. Organizers also unveiled River City Guitar, a 17-foot-tall public art piece highlighting the area’s history and connection to music.
“One of the things that the Levitt Foundation really cares about is this concept that they call social bridging,” Rankin said. “This idea that people from different walks of life, different neighborhoods, different interests can come together and connect over live music.”
The concerts bring national touring musicians to the city, allowing residents to see performers they might not otherwise see while potentially increasing foot traffic for downtown businesses.
The series is scheduled to continue for three years, giving organizers time to build attendance and make concerts to a regular part of the community.
“Ultimately, over time, we hope this becomes a part of Moss Point’s strategy and helps them do the transformational community development that they have planned,” Rankin said.
