    Oxford vs. Everybody

Oxford has never been a town particularly interested in a quiet weekend.
But this weekend feels a little excessive, even for Oxford.
In the span of roughly 72 hours, Ella Langley is coming to town; Oxford and Tupelo will meet under the Friday night lights, and Ole Miss will welcome LSU to Vaught-Hemingway—with a certain former Ole Miss head coach arriving on the visitors’ sideline.
So, basically, Oxford has chosen chaos.
And I mean that in the most complimentary way possible.
There will be country music, high school football, SEC football, old rivalries, new grudges, packed restaurants, a completely unreasonable amount of traffic, and enough red and blue in Lafayette County to be seen from space.
This isn’t just a big weekend in Oxford.
    This is Oxford versus everybody.
And it starts Thursday night with Ella Langley.
Oxford will be full of boots, denim, country music fans, and people who somehow manage to look effortlessly put together while the rest of us are just trying not to sweat through our clothes.
And honestly, that would be enough excitement for most towns.
    Oxford is not most towns.
Because Friday night brings football, and we’re not exactly easing into it.
Oxford High School takes on Tupelo High School at 7 p.m., bringing two of Mississippi’s high school football powerhouses together under the Friday night lights.
If you know North Mississippi football, you know this isn’t just something to do before Saturday.
    This is a game.
Oxford and Tupelo both have proud programs, loyal fans, and communities that take their football seriously. The kind of seriously where people who haven’t had a child in high school since 2008 can still tell you exactly what the coach should have done differently on third down.
And I respect that level of commitment.
By Friday night, Oxford will already be buzzing, the stands will be full, and one North Mississippi town will have bragging rights before bedtime.
    And then Saturday arrives.
    Ole Miss versus LSU.
    In Oxford.
And LSU is bringing Lane Kiffin with them.
    Well.
    That ought to be nice.
After last season’s rather memorable change of address from Oxford to Baton Rouge—Lane will make his return to Vaught-Hemingway, this time standing on the other sideline.
I’m sure everyone will be perfectly normal about it.
After all, Southerners are famous for two things: hospitality and our remarkable ability to let bygones be bygones.
    Right?
    Right.
There are football games, there are rivalries, and then there is your former coach walking back into your stadium dressed like the enemy.
    Saturday should be fun.
Ole Miss and LSU didn’t exactly need another reason to dislike each other. This rivalry has history, stories, heartbreak, and enough questionable officiating memories to keep conversations going for decades. Now we’ve added this little plot twist.
    Bless it.
By Saturday morning, The Grove will be full. The Square will be packed. Traffic will become more of a concept than a real way to get around. Somewhere, somebody will pay an amount for a hotel room that could have covered a respectable mortgage payment in 1997.
And Oxford will absolutely love every minute of it.
    That’s the thing about Oxford.
The town knows how to do a big weekend.
Oxford never seems interested in simply hosting something. It makes an occasion out of it. Give the town a concert, and people make a night of it. Put two high school football powerhouses on the field, and everybody shows up. Bring LSU to town with Lane Kiffin on the sideline, and, well, you should get there early.
For all the jokes about traffic, parking, and crowds, there really is something special about seeing a Mississippi town completely alive.
Restaurants will be full. Stores will be busy. Music will spill out of doorways. Friends will run into friends on the Square. Families will gather in The Grove, and by Sunday morning, Oxford will likely look tired.
Honestly, it will have earned it.
But if any Mississippi town enjoys being right in the middle of everything, it’s Oxford.
So, Tupelo, we’ll see you Friday.
    LSU, we’ll see you Saturday.
    Lane?
    Well, we’ll see you too.
    Oxford will be ready.
