A boat trip through the gum and cypress-lined bayous of the Pascagoula River is an inspiring experience. The majesty of the trees, with their broad bases, exposed roots, and cypress knees is hard to forget. For one visitor, a photo of her favorite view was not enough. She wanted more, so she shared her love of the river with her friends.
Kathryn Manthey has visited the river more than once with her resident daughter Anna Roy, brought to her favorite places by Benny McCoy of McCoy’s River and Marsh Tours. Her passion for one of her favorite scenic views turned into a challenge for her watercolor painting class back in Brussels, Belgium.
Seven members of “Molly’s Afternoon Group at the British and Commonwealth Women’s Club of Brussels” took on the challenge of painting Kathryn’s happy place on the Pascagoula. This group of ladies have been learning to paint from Molly Tchokanova for the past six or so years. From the looks of the results, these ladies have learned much from Molly, and it shows in their beautiful renditions of the river.
“The painting reminds me of the magical times I have spent in an amazing and peaceful environment, and the pleasure of being part of Benny’s tour. He has such an encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna, and it is an honor to be in his presence. Of course, the most important thoughts surrounding the painting is of sharing time with a special daughter of mine.” – Kathryn Manthey.
It is often said that the special places in our own “backyards” are often overlooked by those of us that live nearby. It is not that we do not know about or love them but mostly that we forget how special they are. Visitors like Kathryn remind us of how these places are inspiring. Our job is to ensure that they are protected and promoted, so that others can also visit and perhaps paint them as well.
Thank You Anna for bringing your “Mum” to see our special river and Thank You Kathryn for reminding us that it is every bit as beautiful as your painting, and those of your friends.
From the Pascagoula to Brussels with love!
