Andrew L. Pickens, Sr. is a retired U.S. Army veteran with 25 years of service.

He was raised in the small town of Cordele, GA, and enlisted in the Army in Georgia. After basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, and advanced individual training in Supply at Fort Lee, VA, he reported to his first duty station at Fort Campbell, KY. 

Veterans Day is a day for us to slow down, so that we can honor and celebrate the sacrifices of the brave men and women who selflessly serve our nation. There are so many emotions that are tied into this special day, and I’m sure most people would agree; however, the sentiment I feel myself going back to the most is simply gratitude.

Most educators agree that teaching is more than just a career choice; it’s a calling. This couldn’t be more true for Louise Smith, Mississippi Teacher of the Year, now among five educators who will be presented with the Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence in May of 2024. The Horace Mann Award is one of public education’s top honors.

Thanksgiving is all about reflection, time with loved ones, and food. A newer tradition and spin-off of the traditional Thanksgiving celebration is called Friendsgiving. Friendsgiving is exactly what it sounds like— Thanksgiving, but with your friends!

All aboard! The Canadian Pacific 2023 Holiday Train is coming to town this holiday season from November 20, 2023 through December 19, 2023. Excitingly, it is scheduled to make three stops right here in The Magnolia state.

Your pumpkins have been carved, and it’s time for them to go, or perhaps you would like to get a head start on decorating for the holidays. Either way, here are some safe and fun ways to dispose of your pumpkins, other than punkin’ chunkin’—although that’s fun, too. 

French pot au feu and cassslutte come to mind as well, but perhaps the best example is French onion soup. When there is no stew meat to be had, nor a tough old chicken, a few onions, a left over bone to make stock from, can be turned into a wonderful, hearty soup, French onion soup. This soup dates from medieval times, but the modern version seems to have first been made in the mid-19th century.
