During the month of November, Jackson George Regional Library System (JGRLS) has several activities for all interests ages. During this upcoming month of gratitude, be sure to give thanks for a local library system that provides so many educational opportunities for the community. 

The first Saturday in November means one thing to our family: The Vardaman Sweet Potato Festival.

If you have never been to Vardaman, Mississippi, or attended this festival, then you are in for a treat. I may be a bit prejudiced since I am from Vardaman, but the Sweet Potato Capital of the World is home to the sweetest, most cordial people of the world as well. 

n 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Mississippi to go on a bear hunt, Sharkey County, to be exact. The precise location of the hunt is unknown, although history agrees that it was somewhere in Rolling Fork, Mississippi.

However, what is known is that President Roosevelt’s hunt resulted in the birth of one of America’s most beloved childhood toys, the Teddy Bear and Rolling Fork, which is where it all began.

Presented by the Jackson County Historical and Genealogical Society City of Pascagoula Preservation Commission and the LaPointe-Krebs Foundation, The 17th Annual Historic Cemetery Tour will take place at Krebs Cemetery, 4602 Fort Street, Pascagoula, on Thursday, October 26, 5:30 p.m.—7:30 p.m.

Sports lovers and especially those who like the history of sports will have an opportunity to attend a Tailgate Extravaganza featuring fine athletes from George County.

Healthy food met hearty appetites at the corner of Business Row and Dormitory Row on Thursday (Oct. 19) as The Farmstand made its debut on the University of Mississippi campus.

From Old Highway 63, the George County Fair appears to be brightly lit thriller rides, loud music, screams and all the sights a carnival encompasses. However, the heart of the fair happens a few steps away from the noise at the livestock barn and agricultural exhibit hall.

The Ina Thompson Moss Point Library will reopen on Monday, October 16th, 2023, at 9:00 AM, after undergoing a 1.8-million-dollar renovation funded by the Jackson County Board of Supervisors.

On September 21, the Moss Point Sports Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class with a gala event at Pelican Landing. What a night it was, with 21 of the finest athletes from the River City having their moment before a crowd of almost 300.

It’s fair time! For George County, the big event starts Tues. Oct. 10 and closes Sat., Oct. 14. How about a little county fair history?

Making a list and checking it twice, registration is now open on Eventbrite. Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 30th. Lineup will begin at 4:00 PM; the parade rolls at 6:00 PM sharp.
