Five Ways Mississippians Bring In the New Year

With only a day to spare before 2025 begins, everyone is expected to start preparing to welcome in the new year. There are many different ways to bring in the upcoming year; however, Mississippians have traditions that are quite unique. Here are five ways Mississippi welcomes the New Year!

    Traditional Foods

For years, Mississippians have partaken in eating the same meal every new year: black eyed peas, rice, cornbread, and greens— a meal known as “Hoppin John.” Many believe that consuming this will bring good luck. There are many theories on why this started, and the roots of this practice have not been proven yet. However,  it is a tradition that has been passed down throughout the generations.

    Fireworks

Fireworks are one of the most anticipated events in Mississippi. Firework stands usually start setting up prior to Christmas, giving people ample time to stock up on their favorite fireworks. Many people will pop them for the duration of the week of the new year.

    Staying up Until Midnight

Although this tradition is countrywide, Mississippians take staying up until midnight very seriously. Try hosting a few friends or family and enjoy some hors d’oeuvres to enjoy while waiting for the year’s entrance.

    Watch Night Church Service

This particular tradition is one that churches have done for ages. Growing up, attending a watch night service was always fun because we could spend the remainder of the year with fellow believers. Sometimes, people would give their testimonies on something God did for them over the course of the year. It was even more fun to enjoy donuts or some other breakfast food after the service ended!

Go to a New Year’s Event

Mississippi hosts many fun New Year’s events. Many cities such as Tupelo and Biloxi have events for locals to enjoy. If you enjoy bringing in the New Year while meeting new people in your area, make sure to check your local community for New Year’s celebrations!

Out With the Old. In With the New

2024 is winding to an end. As we say goodbye to this year, let us reflect on all that has occurred in the past year. In our reflections, let’s take time to celebrate our accomplishments (no matter how small or how great). The beauty about this time of year is that we realize how far we have really come, no matter if you had the time of your life or if you’ve “seen better days” (as they say). May 2025 be an amazing year for you all, fellow Mississippians!

How do you ring in the New Year? Do you do any of the activities that are listed here? Let us know in the comment section of Our Mississippi Home’s Facebook page!
