This weekend, students from Union County Schools are excited to present their Fall musical at Magnolia Theatre in New Albany. “High School Musical on Stage!” is based on the 2006 Disney Channel movie, and the storyline of this beloved musical follows Troy, Gabriella, and other students of the fictional East High Wildcats.

Rumor has it that this show will be a toe-tapping experience filled with lots of laughter and amazing performances by students from all four of the Union County Schools: East Union Attendance Center, Ingomar Attendance Center, Myrtle Attendance Center, and West Union Attendance Center.

Directed by Austin Basil, a staff member of East Union Attendance Center, three separate performances of “High School Musical on Stage!” will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 11, and Saturday, October 12, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 13.

“‘High School Musical’ is a classic for the millennial generation,” Basil explained. “It’s special to me because it’s nostalgic, and it’s something that I and so many others watched when we were young. The fact that it has spanned throughout generations and is still relevant and still being sung and acted today says a lot about the content of the musical, the songs, and the dance numbers.”

Almost 60 students from Union County Schools are participating in this Fall production, with about one-third of that number working diligently backstage. Basil is immensely proud of each of the students and is thankful for the mark they will make on the current generation through this production.

“This musical is powerful,” said Basil, “and it sends the wonderful message that no matter who you are, you don’t have to stick to things you’ve always known. You can always broaden your horizons and be interested and involved with things outside of your comfort zone – as long as you have people who support you and bring you together. It’s about community and the impact of friendship that lasts for a lifetime.”

With that thought in mind, Basil and the students of Union County Schools Theater cordially invite everyone to come and see “High School Musical on Stage!” this weekend at Magnolia Theatre, located at 127 East Bankhead Street in New Albany.
