The World’s Largest Weenie Dog Race Lives in Starkville (Yes, Really)

There are festivals… and then there’s Starkville.

Because once a year, this Mississippi college town turns into something you really have to see to believe—where a bugler sounds the call, a flyover roars overhead, and hundreds of dachshunds line up like tiny, determined athletes ready for glory.

    Yes. This is real.

The Starkville Derby, presented by Mama Justice, started in 2023 when a group of friends saw a gap—something missing in a town that knows how to show up. They wanted a spring festival that brought people together, supported the local hospitality community, and gave back in a meaningful way.

    What they created?

The world’s largest weenie dog race.

And somehow, it just keeps getting bigger.

Now an award-winning event, the Derby draws tens of thousands of attendees, racks up millions of online views, and raises meaningful funds for the Oktibbeha County Humane Society—supporting shelter pets and the people who care for them every day.

But numbers don’t really explain it.

You feel it when you get there.

The grounds open early, and the day starts to unfold—nearly 200 food and art vendors, live music drifting through the streets, kids running between booths, and the kind of energy that feels equal parts festival and hometown reunion.

    Then come the traditions.

The call to post from a bugler. The blessing of the track. A flyover that turns heads skyward. And somewhere in the middle of it all… the Wienermobile.

It’s a little unexpected. A little over the top. And completely perfect.

By late morning, the crowd tightens in-because this is what everyone came for.

The races begin around 11, kicked off by the Old Dominick Call to Post Toast, and suddenly, all eyes are on the starting line. For a few seconds at a time, nothing else matters except the blur of short legs, floppy ears, and dogs running with everything they’ve got.

    It’s chaotic. It’s hilarious. It’s weirdly impressive.

And it’s impossible not to smile.

That’s the magic of the Starkville Derby. It doesn’t take itself too seriously—but what it does matters. Every ticket, every vendor, every race supports the Oktibbeha County Humane Society and their mission to care for animals in need.

It’s fun with a purpose. And in Mississippi, that’s a combination people show up for.

So yes, it’s a festival about dachshunds.

But it’s also about community, creativity, and the kind of idea that only works because people believed in it enough to make it happen.

And in Starkville, for one day every spring, the dogs aren’t just part of the show.

    They are the show. 🐾
