This is my favorite time of year. Not because it is such beautiful spring weather. Not because the school year is almost over. Not because of anything other than … high school baseball playoffs.
Yep, even though weather conditions have delayed some games, regular season play has drawn to a close for all of the 200-plus high school baseball teams that belong to the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA). Within the next few weeks, the majority of those teams will be whittled down during the first four rounds of the playoffs.

Then, the 2025 Mississippi State High School Baseball Championship Games will take place between the two remaining North and South teams in each of the seven MHSAA high school classifications (1A-7A). That date is not set in stone yet since weather and graduation dates do factor into the MHSAA playoff schedules across the state.
Now, I realize that most Mississippians are probably not as fully invested in high school baseball as our family. (I personally think that is a big loss for those individuals.) But what I do know for sure is that some of our state’s most amazing young athletes and devoted coaches have worked hard the entire season of regular play with one common objective: to win Mississippi’s coveted State Championship title in high school baseball – and its accompanying trophy.
Up here in North Mississippi, we take our baseball very, very seriously, especially during playoff season. Some of the teams from the North half of the state, regardless of their school’s classification, have championship titles to defend, while others have some grudge rematches that occupy their thoughts.
Of course, the good ol’ unpredictable spring weather here in Mississippi is already playing a big part even in the first round of playoffs.
Despite the cloudy skies, some teams were able to complete the first round of games. In fact, a couple of those defending champs have already made it through to Round 2 of the playoffs. Depending on the rain, the other 2024 champs will be playing this week to determine whether they move forward for the chance to defend their state title or not.
The 2024 Mississippi State High School Baseball Champions were:
Class 7A – Brandon High School
Class 6A – George County High School
Class 5A – Vancleave High School
Class 4A – Sumrall High School
Class 3A – East Webster High School
Class 2A – St. Andrews Episcopal High School
Class 1A – Taylorsville High School.
So, make sure to support your favorite high school baseball players and their teams as they battle for the 2025 Mississippi State High School Baseball Championship title.
If you really don’t have a favorite player or team, go and watch some of Mississippi’s highest ranked high school pitchers, including East Union’s Landon Harmon, Talon Haley from Lewisburg, or visit some of our state’s up-and-coming younger pitchers, like Wyatt McDaniels of Mooreville.
