Paris, New York, Berlin, and Hattiesburg—what do these four cities have in common? Each is on a list of 11 cities globally recognized as leaders in public art. Hattiesburg is a rising star in public art, and is quickly becoming a global art destination.
Home to over 100 public art installations, including murals, sculptures, and brightly painted utility boxes, Hattiesburg, often hailed by many as the birthplace of rock and roll, can now proudly add a global public art destination to its list of accolades. This recognition inspires art enthusiasts and tourists to explore the city’s vibrant art scene with eagerness and anticipation.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be listed with cities in a much larger metropolitan area,” said Kristen Brock, the Programs and Promotions Director for the Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art.
Hattiesburg has repeatedly proven its unwavering commitment to making art available to all residents through the Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art. The city’s diverse and colorful artworks, each piece created with intent and often designed with thought-provoking details, are a testament to Hattiesburg’s dedication to public art, making residents and visitors alike proud and appreciative.
Public art has brought light and life to forgotten corners of the city, making something ordinary extraordinary. Street art has continued to grow in popularity throughout the Magnolia State as communities create creative spaces for locals and tourists to enjoy. Public art is a rising star in Hattiesburg, and people come from all over the state and region to see what The Hub City offers. Aiming to become “The City of 100 Murals,” Hattiesburg continues to attract artists and tourists.

There are numerous ways to enjoy the Art Trail, such as downloading the digital brochure on the VisitHBURG app or using Google Maps. If you’re feeling extra adventurous and choose to whimsically wonder, here are a few Hub City Art hints and highlights to look for on your art walk.
Art In The Alley
Described as the “Tiniest Art Gallery in Mississippi,” this local art gallery is a renovated newspaper stand in the Hattiesburg Pocket Museum’s downtown alleyway. It features small gallery patrons and easels that give full attention to every piece of art placed in the gallery by the public. We won’t tell you where to find the alley; that’s part of the fun; it’s a secret.
Murals
With over 50 murals, Hattiesburg has undoubtedly earned its place on the map for public art. Here are a few to look for:
“Hattiesburg Horizons” stands 13 feet high and 42 feet wide. The mural pays homage to the city’s infrastructure and architectural elements while acknowledging its heritage. The intentional design pays tribute to Hattiesburg’s history while celebrating its present and future—a fitting theme for the city’s 50th mural.
“BE YOU” stands 13 feet high and spans 64 feet wide. It’s the sixth large-scale mural added to the Hattiesburg Avenues and the city’s 47th mural overall. The Avenues is a thriving local commerce and entertainment area along Hardy Street. Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art joined forces with a local clothing boutique, United Apparel Liquidators, to unveil this fashion-forward mural.
“Love Court” is Mississippi’s first full-coverage, professionally painted basketball court. Located in Thames Park, the court features inspirational messages of love and respect with bright and uplifting graphics. The public green space is open daily for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Sculptures
Several beautiful sculptures are throughout the Hub City; “Cloud Music for Hattiesburg” was commissioned by HAPA to celebrate the many musical offerings available locally. It can be found on Walnut Street in Downtown Hattiesburg.
Utilizing Utility Boxes
Over 40 utility boxes have been painted by local and national artists of all ages. Located from one end of Highway 98 to the other, these boxes connect Hattiesburg’s neighborhoods, main roads, and points of interest that make the city unique.
