The African American Military History Museum will host its Annual Veterans Open House on Wednesday, November 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the museum, 305 East 6th Street.
A highlight of the event will be the announcement of the 2025 recipient of the Alvin Eaton Champion Award at 11:30 a.m. This prestigious award recognizes an individual or organization that has demonstrated exceptional dedication to supporting and serving veterans.
The award honors the legacy of Staff Sergeant Alvin Eaton, a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. Eaton played a pivotal role in restoring the East Sixth Street USO, now home to the museum. His dedication to community service extended beyond the military—he served the Hattiesburg community through roles at WDAM, the City of Hattiesburg, and civic organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America, Forrest County NAACP, and the Hattiesburg Chamber of Commerce.
“Mr. Eaton was a constant supporter to the Sixth Street Museum District,” said Latoya Norman, Director of Museums. “We are honored to continue his legacy of service to his country and community with this award.”
The open house is a come-and-go event, free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served, and all veterans in attendance will receive a special token of appreciation.
