There’s something special about fall in Mississippi. The air feels just a little lighter, pumpkins start appearing on porches, and families search for ways to celebrate the season together. In Hattiesburg, one of those traditions is Zoo Boo at the Hattiesburg Zoo. This year, the celebration is getting a magical new twist: Where the Wild Things Glow!

When the gates open in October, the Zoo will come alive with a glowing Halloween wonderland. Imagine walking beneath the trees and being greeted by lanterns shaped like witches, goblins, and glowing creatures that seem to dance in the night. More than one hundred LED lanterns will light the path, creating an enchanting walk that blends Halloween fun with the same sparkling magic that makes the Zoo’s Christmas lights such a hit every December.

    More Than Just Lights

While the glowing displays are the star of the show this year, Zoo Boo has always been about more than decorations. Families can look forward to animal encounters, enrichment activities, and the kind of playful extras that make kids’ eyes light up—like unlimited carousel and train rides, jump houses, and face painting. For those who like a little more adventure, the High Ropes Course will also be open each night for an added thrill.

And of course, no festive evening would be complete without themed food and drinks to keep the energy going. Parents and kids alike can take their time strolling the grounds, enjoying the activities, and soaking in the safe, family-friendly atmosphere. Costumes are welcome, though adults should skip full face masks.

    When and How to Go

Zoo Boo will be held on October 10–11, 17–18, and 24–30, from 6 to 9 p.m. each night. Tickets are $14 when purchased online and $17 at the gate. Families are encouraged to purchase ahead through the Zoo’s website to guarantee admission, as this popular event often fills quickly.

Zoo Boo is a rain-or-shine celebration, so even if the weather is unpredictable, the fun goes on. For any updates, families can keep an eye on the Hattiesburg Zoo’s Facebook or Instagram pages.

    A Mississippi Fall Tradition

Halloween in the Pine Belt already carries a certain kind of charm, but this year, the addition of glowing lanterns makes Zoo Boo a can’t-miss experience. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the season with children, neighbors, and friends—right in the heart of Hattiesburg. For families looking to make memories and celebrate the best parts of fall in Mississippi, Zoo Boo promises to shine a little brighter this year.
