Community support is helping the Lumberton High School band build on five years of growth, including a new wrap for its trailer celebrating the program’s accomplishments.
Under band director Zachary Everett, the band has grown from 12 members five years ago to a total of 32, with 28 students participating this year.
Band Booster Club president Bridget Pigeon said local residents and organizations have provided supplies and resources that create more opportunities for Lumberton students from fifth through 12th grade.
“The community has definitely stepped up within the past two years for sure,” Pigeon said.
The growth has also strengthened the band’s sense of community. Pigeon described a student who recently transferred from a larger band and has found success in Lumberton’s smaller program.
“He came from a big band and now he’s in this little band and he’s thriving. He’s not overlooked,” Pigeon said. “They get more one-on-one, they help each other. It’s a family.”
The new trailer wrap was made possible through community support. Sponsors include Lumberton Main Street, Lamar County, Pearl River County, the city of Lumberton, Lumberton Cafe, Chuck’s, America First Realty and EEJ Painting.
Pigeon said the new look has given students a greater sense of pride in the band.
“That makes the kids a little bit more proud to say they’re a member of the band,” Pigeon said.
