Lumberton Public Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary on May 14, bringing the community together to focus on the local history and future of the public library.
The Lumberton Public Library, a part of the county’s public library system, was donated by Mississippi Power Company on May 14, 1974 and officially opened its doors April 11, 1976, offering free resources for any registered individuals with a library card.
The anniversary will be held at 6 p.m. with an emphasis to be a relaxed evening full of memory sharing, friendship and refreshment.
Lumberton librarian Sherri McSorley said “…the event is open to anyone in the public who has information, stories or personal experiences connected to the library, including its previous locations throughout the city.”
The celebration plans to not only highlight the background of the library’s several locations over the years including the second floor of a bank, the old City Hall and other former sites, but Lumberton history books and materials.
“We hope to have to have local officials, including the mayor and city council members and the family members of Martha Martin who is recognized as the first librarian in the building currently used by the library. The children’s section of the library is named in her honor”, said McSorley.
At this time, no formal speakers have been confirmed. For more information contact the Lumberton Library at (601)796-2505 or Lumberton Public Library Facebook.
