    Thank you, Crystal Grill

The Crystal Grill, a nearly century-old Delta restaurant, recently announced the closure of its doors this month, marking the end of an era. The family-owned and operated establishment has been a Greenwood, Mississippi landmark since 1933 and a beloved stop for tourists and locals alike. Featured by the Food Network and Southern Living, it has delighted customers with its delicious Delta classics like the cutlet, broiled gulf shrimp, and lemon pepper catfish for decades, leaving a significant mark on the Mississippi Delta history and its iconic cuisine.

The sign above the door advertised “air conditioning” for the better part of each hot southern summer; that’s all you needed to know. Never mind that the Crystal Grill has been a Greenwood, Mississippi landmark for over a century or that the meringue-topped pies may be the most famous dessert in the entire Mississippi Delta. This iconic sign told everyone they could come to the Crystal Grill to relax, sip sweet tea, and enjoy a place where time moves slower and air-conditioning should never be taken for granted.

The dining room at the Crystal Grill is a living testament to the restaurant’s evolution. What started as a humble 60-seat club, open practically all day, has grown into a winding, intimate, 250-seat restaurant serving lunch and dinner. Each expansion and remodel has carefully preserved the unique charm of the added space, resulting in an eclectic collection of rooms, each with its own distinct feel. This unique charm, a blend of history and comfort, will be dearly missed.

The menu at the Crystal Grill was a delightful mix of traditional Delta offerings and cuisine inspired by the Gulf Coast. It catered to every palate with a wide selection of steaks, fish, and even pasta. The southern vegetables and sides, from Fredonia to creamed corn, added a touch of ‘home-cooked comfort. And one would not want to miss the uniquely Southern ‘Pink Velvet,’ a summertime ‘salad’ that was a true treat for the taste buds. The variety and quality of the menu at the Crystal Grill will be fondly remembered, but the feeling of home and nostalgia will be just as missed, if not more.

And oh my, the pie! The Crystal Grill pies are legendary for their mile-high meringue and are arguably the most famous in the Magnolia State. Other popular desserts included a southern lemon icebox pie, but the meringue was iconic, and pies could be purchased near the register upon checkout.

From 1933 to 2024, the Crystal Grill was a must-stop for trips through the Delta. Here, you can trust the food to be delicious and filling, the meringue peaks to be high, and genuine hospitality to be found.

Thank you, Crystal Grill, for everything.
