Thank a Farmer at The Depot

It has been said, and wisely so, that everyone needs a farmer every day, at least three times a day. To take that wisdom a step further, go ahead, and thank a farmer if you ate today.

That type of gratefulness fueled the recent Grand Opening of The Depot, Tupelo’s new Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

The Depot was a long time in the making for the city of Tupelo. It all began several years back with much less fanfare at a small farmers’ market that evolved under a large open shed on Spring Street. That first fresh marketing effort began as a way to help supply small area farms in North Mississippi with a direct sales outlet.

In the process, the entire Tupelo community gained access to some of the region’s freshest and healthiest foods. Along with the growing popularity of the Spring Street venue and the growing market for healthier food options, the city started plans a few years ago to build a downtown market with more space and greater access for visitors, as well as residents.

Funded by the city of Tupelo and the Tupelo Convention and Visitor Bureau, this new farmers’ market was appropriately called The Depot because it is located in a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose, outdoor facility near the railroad tracks that run through downtown Tupelo, on the corner of Front Street and Court Street. Also appropriate, the theme for this new farmers’ market at The Depot is “Four Hours of Fresh,” since the venue is now open each Saturday through the month of October – from 8 a.m. until noon.

With the capacity to house over 30 vendors, The Depot offers much more than fresh, locally grown produce. Customers who browse the market will also find fresh baked goods, home-canned items, locally harvested honey, fresh plants and flowers, as well as a variety of artisanal crafts. At times, local musicians will also serenade market visitors.

In fact, The Depot was purposefully designed to provide a great space for the farmers’ market and other community events and activities, including live musical performances. It’s truly a win-win solution – The Depot will boost the economy of the city of Tupelo and surrounding farmers, as well as the overall health of its citizens.

Or, visit the website of the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association to fill out a vendor’s application or see a list of each week’s vendors: https://www.tupelomainstreet.com/farmers-market.

The Depot is a great place to spend a Saturday morning! Just make sure to thank a farmer while you’re there.
