In downtown McComb, Pike School of Art – Mississippi is steadily building something rooted in community, access, and shared creativity. Rather than operating as a traditional gallery space, Pike School of Art focuses on classes, workshops, and community-centered programming designed to bring people together through hands-on learning and conversation.
Located at 131 North Broadway, the organization serves as a welcoming space where people of all ages can learn new skills, explore creativity, and take part in shaping McComb’s cultural future. Much of that work happens through PSA’s Community-Centered Classes (C³) program, which offers free classes taught by local artists and creatives.
This winter, Pike School of Art is hosting both Crocheting 101 and Crocheting 201, led by local instructor Akeisha Simmons. Crocheting 101 meets every Saturday from 1–3 p.m., while Crocheting 201 meets Saturdays from 10 a.m.–12 p.m. The classes are designed to be approachable and supportive, offering step-by-step instruction, hands-on practice, and the opportunity for participants to leave with a completed project.
In addition to educational programming, Pike School of Art also serves as a space for planning and civic engagement. On Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 5–6 p.m., PSA will host a McComb Arts & Entertainment District Planning Meeting, inviting community members to take part in conversations about how the arts can continue to support and strengthen downtown McComb. The meeting is free and open to the public, with RSVPs encouraged.
Pike School of Art operates under the guidance of a local board of directors, with Calvin Phelps serving as Executive Director. The current board includes community members serving in leadership roles such as president, vice president, secretary, and additional board positions, reflecting PSA’s emphasis on shared responsibility and local involvement.
As the organization continues to grow, Pike School of Art is also actively inviting new voices into its leadership, with applications open for individuals interested in serving on the PSA Board of Directors. The call encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds who want to be part of guiding the organization’s future and supporting arts access in Pike County.
More than anything, Pike School of Art represents a shift toward creativity that is practical, welcoming, and community-driven. Whether it’s learning a new skill, participating in a planning meeting, or stepping into a leadership role, PSA offers a place where creativity isn’t just displayed — it’s built together.
