To celebrate Arbor Day and shine a light on the value of trees to our environment, the City of Ocean Springs, the Ocean Springs Environmental Committee, MS Forestry Commission, Singing River Electric Cooperative, and Fulgham’s Inc. are sponsoring a tree giveaway. The drive-through event, open to Ocean Springs residents, will be held at the Ocean Springs Civic Center on Saturday, February 13, from 9 a.m. – 12 noon.
We all appreciate having trees in our yards; they are beautiful and provide much-needed shade. However, there’s much more to the value of trees. Trees are valuable to our very survival, as they collect carbon and manufacture oxygen. That’s why there’s a planet-wide initiative to plant millions of trees.
There are many reasons to plant a tree. Here are 10 commonly shared reasons that remind us of just how valuable trees are to our communities and our quality of life:
- Trees increase property values.
- Trees clean the air.
- Trees slow water runoff.
- Trees prevent soil erosion.
- Trees help buffer noise pollution.
- Trees cool our homes, streets, and cities.
- Trees can save you money on energy costs.
- Trees are beautiful.
- Trees are sacred.
- Medicines are derived from trees.
So….the message is clear: plant trees!
