From Cleveland, Mississippi, to the National Stage

I remember the first photo I saw of Markel Bell standing next to my husband, Les George, during his time coaching at Holmes Community College. At 6-foot-9 and approximately 345 pounds, Markel’s size immediately stood out.

When I first met Markel not long after that, what struck me was not his size but how humble he was. He was observant and respectful, carrying himself with a quiet presence as he began his college career after coming from Cleveland, Mississippi.

In interviews, Markel has spoken about his time in Goodman, Mississippi, a place he once described as being in the middle of nowhere. But that distance from everything else became part of the work. Away from distractions, junior college gave him space to focus, settle into routine, and commit fully to what he was building. Goodman was not just where he played football; it was where he learned how to be present, disciplined, and intentional with his time.

During the two seasons my husband coached Markel at the junior college level, his perspective began to change in noticeable ways. Early on, conversations centered on Markel’s physical potential and what his size could allow him to do on the field. Over time, however, the focus shifted.

My husband often talked about how hard Markel was working, the extra time spent watching film, the attention to detail, and the way he wanted to understand why things worked, not just how to do them. It became less about what Markel could become physically and more about who he already was in his approach to the game.

Yes, Markel had the talent to play football. That was never in question. But what stood out most was something deeper. What was developing was not just an offensive lineman refining technique. It was a young man who was driven, disciplined, and determined to be great at whatever he set his mind to.

Football was the vehicle, but the work ethic was the engine. The consistency. The focus. The refusal to rely on size alone.

That mindset carried Markel forward, earning him the opportunity to continue his career with the Miami Hurricanes, where he has grown into a key presence on the offensive line. Now, he is preparing to play on college football’s biggest stage, the national championship.

Those closest to Markel say that growth was especially evident during his junior college years. His mother watched him learn responsibility quickly, balancing football, academics, and everyday life, while becoming more independent as he adjusted to being away from home. With each season, she saw his confidence grow, not in loud moments but in the way he carried himself and handled what was asked of him.

As Markel Bell prepares to take the field with the eyes of the country watching, his journey stands as a reminder that talent may open doors, but character determines how far someone walks through them. From Cleveland to the national stage, his story is one of belief, patience, and earned confidence, and one Mississippi can be proud of.
