Who says you have to leave Mississippi to enjoy a vacation? Our great state is full of fun spots where you can enjoy a nice, relaxing getaway. Whether you’re a Mississippi native or considering paying the state a visit, I can assure you that this state is full of amazing places to enjoy an incredible, entertaining, and eventful fall vacation.

The beauty about Mississippi is that not every area is the same. Each region brings its own unique atmosphere. From loud college towns roaring with college slogans, to slow quaint communities where everyone knows each other by first (and last) name, to cutesy coastal communities, the Magnolia State is full of places to venture into.

    Biloxi

If you’re looking for a bustling, coastal scenery, Biloxi is the perfect place for you. Did you know that Biloxi was once crowned “Seafood Capital of the World”? Sink your feet into the sand after enjoying some of the finest seafood the state has to offer!

    Waveland

Still looking for Coastal but without the bustling vibes? Waveland might be right up your alley. This small town offers the fun of the coastal scene with a more serene atmosphere. Waveland is known as the “Hospitality City” for good reason. The small town atmosphere allows you to enjoy the sweet, southern hospitality of the locals.

    Tupelo

The birthplace of Elvis Presley, Tupelo is a great town to visit with a lot of interesting history. You can even pay a visit to Elvis’s home for a tour! Tupelo is located in northern Mississippi.

    Oxford

Oxford is also located near northern Mississippi. If you’re looking for some great football tailgating, Oxford is the perfect city for you. Ole Miss has the most amazing tailgating culture, full of amazing food and great people!

    Tishomingo

Are you an avid hiker? If so, you’ll want to take a trip here! Tishomingo has a fantastic hiking scene for people who enjoy hiking or those who want to try their hand at hiking. In addition to this, this is a small town, so if you prefer a quieter getaway, book a trip here!

    Madison

Located near the metropolitan Jackson, MS area, Madison is a lovely place for a getaway. This fun suburb has some amazing walking trails with great views. It has been said to be “one of the best places to live in Mississippi”.

    Cleveland

Fun fact: Did you know this city was named for our former USA president, Grover Cleveland? Yes. It sure was! How cool is that?

If you love music, you’ll want to spend some time in Cleveland. The Grammy Museum located here celebrates the talented musicians and artists from Mississippi!

    Ocean Springs

We are taking it back to the coast with this one. Ocean Springs is absolutely charming. It is home to the Ocean Springs Art Association, which represents over 300 local artists. If you’re a lover of art, add this city to your list of places to visit.

What Should You Do on Your Vacation?

Activities will vary from city to city; however, there is a general guide for how to make the best of your travel plans.

    • Try a new, local restaurant. I get it, we all love a large order of fries from McDonald’s (at least I do); however, it is far more exciting to try a new restaurant locally owned by a fellow Mississippian. This is also a great way to support smaller businesses! Look up a place in the area you’ve never tried before and stop by for a meal.
    • Participate in a new activity. Trying something different can be daunting, but you’ll never know the outcome until you try! Partaking in new activities is also a great way to get social and meet new friends.
    • Be present. It’s so easy to get caught up in what is waiting for you upon your arrival from your destination, but remember that living in the moment is far more important than worrying about what is to come.

The Question is: Where to go Now?

You don’t have to get jet lagged to have a top-notch vacation experience. Choose a city. Pack up your bags. Grab a friend and hit the highway, or the scenic Natchez Trace! Where are you most excited about visiting?
