The American Prize National Nonprofit Competitions in the Performing Arts – David (Volosin) Katz, founder and chief judge – has announced that The Hub City Players production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” has been named a finalist for the American Prize in Musical Theatre.

D.Kosmo of Lyon, Mississippi was born in Seabrook, Texas in 1971. He spent his early years making art, hunting for Indian artifacts, and creating music. He graduated in 1991, with a Graphic Design degree and then moved to Mexico, painting murals for nightclubs.

Attendees to the June Open Mic Poetry Night at Pacesetter Gallery enjoyed poetry inspired by original Mississippi art. Each year, the Mississippi Poetry Society selects a Mississippi artist for the cover of their Mississippi Poetry Society Journal Contest Edition. Laura Mayo, a rural artist from outside Hernando, MS, and artist at Pacesetter Gallery since its opening 2021, was selected for the 2024 cover.

The immensely popular FestivalSouth® brings more than 50 live art, music, theatre, and dance events to the Hattiesburg area May 28 through June 22, 2024. Featuring many University of Southern Mississippi (USM) faculty, alumni, students, and staff, the festival has become a mainstay, offering opportunities to performers and audiences alike.

For 30 years, The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Steel Pan Orchestra (SoMiSPO), under the baton of Dr. John Wooton, professor of percussion in the School of Music, has been delighting Hattiesburg with the rich and vibrant culture of steel pan music from Trinidad and Tobago — the southernmost island country in the Caribbean.

Over 15,000 people from 21 states across the country attended the Flowood Family Festival. The Festival is known as the official kick-off of Summer for the City of Flowood and features a free concert, food, and fun in a family friendly environment.

Due to recent storms causing high flood waters, the 2024 En Plein Air Paint Competition will change venues. Originally scheduled to take place at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park, the event will now be hosted at the Flowood Nature Park in Flowood, MS. The event is taking place this Saturday, April 13, 2024.

“If all of history’s musicians formed a band, Mississippi bluesmen would play lead guitar.” It’s no secret that the Magnolia State is filled with talent, but it seems to have more than its fair share of musical genius. 

To see some of the amazing talents that have hailed from Mississippi and from around the country, you’ve got to visit America at the Crossroads: The Guitar and a Changing Nation, presented by the National GUITAR Museum at the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience (The MAX) in historic downtown Meridian.

A bill designating the month of March as Mississippi Musicians Month became law on March 20, 2024, after swift passage through the Mississippi Legislature. Spearheaded by Dr. Jay Dean and the Hattiesburg Concert Association, the bill was championed by State Rep. Missy McGee of Hattiesburg, Miss.

2024 En Plein Air Competition LeFleur’s Bluff State Park includes even more artists, coming in from all parts of Mississippi for this year’s competition. This event, brought to you by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks and Pacesetter Gallery, will showcase 44 talented Mississippi artists as they paint LeFleur’s Bluff State Park competing for publication in Mississippi Wildlife magazine and cash prizes.

Mississippi has a wide variety of public art that captivates us. The Belhaven community is having their own public art movement that has been sweeping the area by storm for a few years now. 

The Hattiesburg Pocket Museum Alley has a new installation, Hattiesburg’s Rainbow Bridge.  “Our Rainbow Bridge is a place to honor and recognize our four-legged family members,” said Rick Taylor, Executive Director of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission, which oversees and manages the Hattiesburg Pocket Museum alley.  People are encouraged to attach their pets’ tags and collars to the rail of the bridge to memorialize them and remember their love.
