Countless events are going on this month to celebrate Halloween. Maybe, you’d rather keep the festivities at home, and that’s ok!

Mississippi is a culture and a place that likes to celebrate. We have food and festivities for just about everything, so why would Halloween be any different?

Here’s a guide on how to throw a Mississippi-themed Halloween party:

    Fantastic Food

Food is a must at any holiday gathering. Simple options like chicken fingers and pizza are easy crowd-pleasers. Mississippians love their Captain Rodney’s dip with some Ritz crackers and an easy festive fruit tray. Charcuterie boards are trendy right now and a fun way to feed a crowd. Themed cookies or cupcakes are sure to treat any sweet tooth! Or, keep it simple and ask guests to bring a favorite dish and have a spectacular spooky potluck! Set up a long table with some Halloween decorations, and you’re all set!

    Devilish Drinks

A festive Halloween cocktail is a fun option for the adult crowd to add to your haunted house party. Depending on the ages of your guest list, drink options will vary. For the younger groups, consider making a ghoulish green punch.

    Haunted Happenings

A Mississippi-style Halloween party will undoubtedly need some fun things to do! Classic options like corn-hole, pumpkin carving, and Karaoke are always a good time. Put a seasonal spin on some games like “Bat Pong” or “Mummy Wrap,” and don’t forget that a scary outdoor movie can also set the mood.

    Bayou-Boo!

Halloween decorations are easy to come by, and they are very affordable. You can find cobwebs, plastic spiders, and other traditional decorations at any discount store. Throw in some pumpkins and some candles, and there’s the vibe. To add some more Mississippi to your party, consider adding some fake alligators or other swamp sightings from the Bayou.

Hotty Toddy and Eudora Welty at Your Door

What’s a Halloween party without some costumes? Invite guests to dress up like famous Mississippians. Throw on a suit coat and a fake mustache, and suddenly William Faulkner is at your door! We love football here in the Magnolia State, so consider inviting guests to dress up like super fans or team rivals (all Alabama fans, please roll-tide home). Ever heard of the term Mississippi Hippy? There are endless costume ideas for a Mississippi-themed Halloween party. Be sure to have a costume contest and issue the winner a ridiculous award they must keep up with until next year’s party, or kick up the competition with a gift card to a favorite local place in your area.

    Happy Halloween!
