From the beginning of time, dads have been known for dispensing advice. Whether solicited or unsolicited, this advice has helped children deal with whatever situation they are facing. It may be given during a conversation before an important life event, while taking care of household chores, or even while just driving around town. No matter how it’s given, it often stays with us long after being spoken, and more poignantly, it becomes a cherished memory once dad is no longer here.
Fatherly advice runs the gamut from teaching lessons about the value of responsibility and of using caution when making decisions to emphasizing the importance of financial responsibility and of thinking carefully before taking action. But not all dad advice is serious, as dads are known to be quite humorous. Usually, this advice comes in the form of a witty saying and is prone to be unique to the speaker and is often passed down through the generations as family tradition.
As we prepare to celebrate Father’s Day this weekend, it’s time to reflect upon the pearls of wisdom given by dads and father figures in our lives:
“Commit and follow through”
It means to fully dedicate yourself to a decision and follow through with every necessary step until the goal is achieved.
“It’s better than the alternative”
It means when a difficult situation is deemed preferable only when compared to death.
“The first rule of holes is that when you are in one, stop digging”
It means when you find yourself in a bad situation to stop doing what you’re doing because it will only makes things worse.
“When in doubt about a decision, do nothing”
It means what it says, when you have a doubt about making a decision, to do nothing.
“If you’re going to hoot with the owls, you better be able to soar with the eagles”
It means if you’re going to stay up or go out late, you better be able to face the consequences the next day.
“Sometimes, the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train”
This describes situations where a seemingly hopeful end to a difficult period turns out to be a new, immediate threat or a large problem.
“Take the path of least resistance”
It means to choose the easiest, simplest or most straightforward course of action in a given situation.
“Don’t boil a dead crab”
Besides stating the obvious, it means not only would doing so make you ill, but it also means not to not waste your time on situations which won’t result in anything good.
“You can’t help those who won’t help themselves”
It means any effort to assist someone is futile unless that person is willing to put in the personal work to improve their own situation
Happy Father’s Day!
