Tucked just south of Newton, Mississippi, along Highway 15, sits one of the state’s most remarkable treasures—Hidden Springs Arabian’s Horse Farm. At first glance, it looks like an unassuming piece of countryside, but within its 100 acres, visitors find themselves immersed in a world that blends Mississippi tradition with international acclaim.

Hidden Springs is home to more than 50 rare Egyptian and Egyptian-bred Arabian horses, a breed admired around the world for their beauty, athleticism, and gentle spirit. The farm isn’t just pastures and stables—it boasts a sprawling covered arena where horses are trained and prepared for some of the nation’s most prestigious competitions. Over the years, championship ribbons and trophies have become part of the décor, evidence of the farm’s reputation for excellence.

    Patrick Swayze’s Mississippi Legacy

One of the most fascinating pieces of Hidden Springs’ history is its connection to the late Patrick Swayze. While the world knew him as a Hollywood star, Mississippians remember him in a different light—as a horseman. His prized stallion, Tammen, became the foundation of Hidden Springs’ brood stock and the sire of many of the farm’s most celebrated horses.

It’s not uncommon for visitors to pause in awe when they realize that the same actor who danced across the big screen in Dirty Dancing and Ghost left his mark here in Newton County. The Mississippi farm became a natural extension of Swayze’s passion for Arabian horses, and today his influence still runs through the bloodlines of the horses that call Hidden Springs home.

    A Farm Built on Passion

Hidden Springs was founded in 1988 by co-owners Betty Gail Skinner and Tricia McGehee, who returned to Mississippi after time spent in Hawaii. What began with 10 acres quickly grew as the women purchased adjoining land and built a world-class training and breeding facility.

Skinner, who grew up near Meridian on a horse farm, had Arabian horses in her blood long before founding Hidden Springs. For her, the farm was a way to return to her roots and to share the beauty of Egyptian Arabians with others. Together, she and McGehee created not only a business but also a sanctuary that preserves the heritage and refinement of the breed.

    Horses with History

The Egyptian Arabian is known as one of the oldest and purest bloodlines in the world. Nicknamed “Drinkers of the Wind,” these horses are celebrated for their endurance, elegance, and strong bonds with humans. Walk through the stables at Hidden Springs, and you’ll quickly understand why they’ve captured hearts for centuries—their large, expressive eyes and gentle dispositions make them unforgettable.

Training at Hidden Springs is serious business. Horses are prepared for both halter and performance competitions, with months—even years—of conditioning before they ever step into a show ring. Yet, despite the ribbons and accolades, there’s an undeniable sense of humility and devotion that permeates the farm. This isn’t just about winning titles—it’s about preserving a bloodline and celebrating God’s creation.

Mississippi Pride on a Global Stage

From Newton, these horses travel across the country to compete in national shows, rubbing shoulders with competitors and admirers from around the world. Hidden Springs has become more than just a farm; it’s a Mississippi ambassador for the Arabian breed. Whether at the Egyptian Event in Lexington, Kentucky, or in show rings across North America, the farm carries a piece of Mississippi with it.

And perhaps that’s what makes Hidden Springs so special. While it has welcomed celebrities and royalty, its heart remains deeply tied to Newton County. For local families who may have driven past Wickware Road a hundred times without knowing what was tucked away beyond the trees, it’s a reminder that Mississippi holds more stories, history, and connections than meets the eye.

    A Lasting Legacy

Today, Hidden Springs continues to thrive, with its horses cherished by families, collectors, and showmen alike. Some horses are sold as beloved companions, while others command high values as champions in the making. For children especially, owning one of these horses offers lessons in responsibility and joy that extend far beyond the pasture.

The farm has no plans for expansion, choosing instead to focus on quality, preserving the straight Egyptian Arabian line, and raising horses that honor both tradition and excellence.

From Hollywood to Highway 15, Patrick Swayze’s legacy lives on in Mississippi soil through the strength and beauty of the Arabian horse. Hidden Springs is proof that some of the state’s greatest treasures aren’t hidden at all—they’re right here, waiting to be discovered.
