Vicksburg, Mississippi is a beautiful city with a rich, profound history. It was founded in 1811 and became incorporated on January 29, 1825. This year, starting January 29, 2025, Vicksburg will kick off the celebration of its 200th anniversary of becoming incorporated. The celebration will be year long and will focus on five core concepts.

    History of Vicksburg, MS

Vicksburg is one of many special cities in Mississippi. Known for its historic part in the Civil War, Vicksburg has played a monumental role, not only in Mississippi history, but in the history of the United States of America. This beautiful city was the first place Coca-Cola was bottled in 1894. Vicksburg is home to roughly 21,560 citizens and piques the interest of millions of tourists who seek to explore and learn more about Vicksburg’s impact.

What to Expect at the Celebration

This celebration will last throughout 2025 and will focus on five core themes:

    1. People
    2. The River
    3. Art and Culture
    4. Lifestyle
    5. Government and Military

Each of these themes encapsulates the culture and lifestyle that Vicksburg upholds. It is a place that values those who inhabit it. It holds two major rivers (the Yazoo River and the Tallahatchie River). Art and culture are a major attraction for many visitors, as they come to visit their museums that tell the stories of the past. Understanding Vicksburg’s role in United States history, focusing on the government and military are wonderful ways to honor the legacy of those who fought. Come ready to celebrate.

Expect to see many excited faces from both locals and visitors. If you are not from Vicksburg, you are sure to be greeted by the kind locals. There are plans for a big showcase event, a ball, extravagant parades and other fun events. There will be an emphasis on the history, current era, and the future of this wonderful city.

The Vicksburg 200 Committee hopes to see people who are residents of Vicksburg and people from all over the state. Currently, they bring in roughly 2 million visitors each year, which means their economy is constantly growing. With the bicentennial celebration being this year, Vicksburg will see even more economic success. The leaders of this city have high hopes that this year’s events will inspire others to continue visiting Vicksburg.

    A Celebration Well Deserved

This celebration is certainly well deserved. Considering the impact that this incredible city has had both on our state and the country collectively, it is safe to say that celebrating it is well deserved. Have you ever been to Vicksburg? Is Vicksburg your home? What is your favorite thing about this well-known city? Let us know in the comment section of Our Mississippi Home’s Facebook page.
