I read somewhere that Miss Piggy often said, “Never eat more than you can lift.” But I have a question for my favorite Muppet: “When you said ‘lift,’ did you mean with a fork or a shovel?”
Because when I go to my favorite Mississippi eatery, I usually wish I had hidden a small sandbox shovel in my purse. Seriously, I could eat myself silly at Crave in Tupelo. And I am not alone in my estimation of this award-winning gem of a dessert destination.
Originally, Crave began as a weekend, “desserts-only” cafe in downtown Tupelo, with every item made from scratch. But due to an immediate and ongoing outpouring of community love – and demand for more Crave goodness – the business expanded its hours and added a full-scale coffee selection, a wide array of pastries, and catering services. Now, nine years later, Crave is open seven days a week.
Part of their success can be credited to Crave’s signature dish, the deliciously indulgent Skillet Cookie, awarded “Best Dessert” in the state by Mississippi Magazine. Actually, it has been designated as one of the best desserts in North Mississippi every year since the café’s opening.
Pity the person who has not tried Crave’s Skillet Cookie!
This made-from-scratch, ooey-gooey chocolate chip cookie is served baked to order, topped with two heaping scoops of vanilla ice cream, and then finished with lots of chocolate and caramel drizzle.
People swear it’s the perfect dessert for couples, with plenty of scrumptious goodness for two. Some folks even tell tales of true love born over a Crave Skillet Cookie. But I refuse to share even one bite with my sweetheart; he can order one of his own.
For his sake though, I do keep an eye out online for each weekend’s featured dessert, the special homemade goodie that is not a part of the regular Crave menu. My husband’s favorite is the homemade Banana Pudding Cake. Like all the feature weekend desserts, it almost always sells out quickly.
Weekend specials are planned according to the season, local area events, and of course – demand. Check out this weekend’s featured dessert at Crave or peruse the full daily menu at cravetupelo.com.
But be forewarned: This Tupelo hotspot is addictive. One visit, and you will keep coming back to Crave, again and again.
