Despite the raging temperatures, summer is quickly drawing to a close. And here in Mississippi, the advent of autumn means the loss of two precious commodities, homegrown tomatoes and watermelons.
In fact, I am already mourning the loss of my endless supply of ripe tomatoes, as the crop is waning fast But now is the perfect time for homegrown watermelons, in my opinion. So that is exactly why I am reminding my fellow Mississippians to make sure and attend the 2025 Watermelon Carnival this weekend in Water Valley, Mississippi.
According to my friends who live in Water Valley, this is THE event of the year. It’s the time when people gather from all over the state (and beyond) to celebrate watermelons so big and juicy that they are too wonderful to describe. It’s one of those things you simply must experience for yourself.
The Southeastern Tourism Society calls the carnival one of the top 20 festivals in the southeastern United States, with as many as 20,000 visitors coming to Water Valley every year during the first weekend in August to celebrate the area’s renown watermelons.
But watermelons are not the only food items on the agenda for this year’s carnival. The food choices are almost endless, with delicious funnel cakes topping the list of carnival favorites. On top of all the great foods, there’s always live music, arts, crafts, fun contests, and entertainment just for the kiddos. And don’t forget a fireworks display that is unmatched –and unforgettable.
Now, Water Valley’s Watermelon Carnival was well known to me, but learning the history behind the festival was totally new. Local historians say that it all started back during the Great Depression, on August 27, 1931, to be exact.
Just like most small towns of that unforgettable period in American history, times were tough for everyone. Crops had failed repeatedly, and outside sources of income were few and far between for many Mississippians of that day. Truth was, their Depression Era world revolved around the crops they grew, and as such, their world was in deep financial trouble.
But … the leaders of Water Valley were not giving up. Instead, the Water Valley Junior Chamber of Commerce was resourceful, and its members saw the possibility of hope in one local resource that grew well in the area’s soil – watermelons. Plus, Water Valley watermelons were known far and wide for their great size and exceptionally sweet taste.
The reality of that first Watermelon Carnival far exceeded the hopes of those local businessmen. According to press reports about the event, people began pouring into the town on Thursday morning, and by day’s end, the crowd was estimated to be close to 20,000 in number.
Almost a century later, thousands of people still come to Water Valley annually to celebrate the watermelon with friends, family members, and strangers just waiting to become friends.
So, don’t miss out on this weekend’s annual celebration at the 2025 Water Valley Watermelon Carnival. The fun will start on Friday, August 1, with a street dance and that fabulous fireworks show at Water Valley’s City Park.
Then, Saturday, August 2, will be filled with a watermelon parade, as well as a full slate of entertainment, amazing food vendors, arts and crafts, a 3K fun run, and antique car show.
Best of all, it’s one more chance to savor and celebrate the taste of summer with some of Mississippi’s finest watermelons. And honestly, there’s not much finer food on earth than that.
