Vardaman, Mississippi, is known as the Sweet Potato Capitol of the World for good reason, with over 100 million pounds of sweet potatoes traveling from the fields of Vardaman to tables around the world each year.

This tiny but mighty Mississippi town has a little over 1,000 citizens, but those citizens and the 10,000-plus acres dedicated to “tater farming” have managed to help our state consistently garner the spot as the nation’s 3rd top producer of sweet potatoes.

More importantly, the sweet potatoes raised in the rich, fertile soil of this Calhoun County community are renowned for their distinctly sweet flavor. To put it plainly, Vardaman sweet potatoes simply taste better!

In fact, people come from all over Mississippi and beyond to visit this hospitable little town each November in celebration of the goodness of this nutrient-dense vegetable at the annual Vardaman Sweet Potato Festival.

November 1, 2025, will mark the 52nd anniversary of this traditional Mississippi festival. So, go ahead and mark those calendars now for this celebration. But it might also be a great idea to make room on those calendars and schedule a little trip through Vardaman before November to enjoy the scrumptious goodies found at Sweet Potato Sweets.

For those who might not recognize the name, Sweet Potato Sweets is a family-owned bakery and confectionary located in Vardaman on Sweet Potato Avenue, right off Highway 8. And what an amazing culinary treat awaits those who have never tasted the goodness of the handmade goodies found in this little shop.

Every item made at Sweet Potato Sweets is made with loving care from sweet potatoes grown right there in Vardaman. Plus, these delicious treats come from recipes created by Vardaman friends and family members – treasured, tried-and-true recipes that were shared and passed down to the owner of this bakery, Jan Cook Houston. So, every bite of every goodie is filled with love – and tradition.

Yet, the most amazing aspect of Sweet Potato Sweets might be the wide (and creative) variety of baked goods and confections offered to customers. There are five different takes on the traditional sweet potato pie, including a sugar-free selection. Add to that a diverse collection of sweet breads and muffins, as well as a sweet potato pancake mix.

This sweet little shop also offers some very unique sweet potato treats, such as marmalade, butter, pecan sandies, fudge, bon bons, cocoons, and the one-of-a-kind sweet potato yum yum, which is absolutely yummy. To be absolutely honest, every item is yummy and good.

But if you cannot schedule a trip to Sweet Potato Sweets in the near future, have no fear. The ladies at this Vardaman culinary hotspot are experts at packing and shipping their treats around the world. Simply visit sweetpotatosweets.com to shop online and order some of this Mississippi hometown goodness for yourself.
