Rarely does Mississippi experience a New Year filled with snow and flashy parties, but that doesn’t stop the people from gleefully ringing in the New Year.
Celebrating the New Year in Mississippi evokes feelings of joy, nostalgia and even sadness. From remembering the year behind to anticipating the one ahead, this time of year is somewhat melancholy.
Moving to Massachusetts has me reflecting on some of the ways that Mississippi welcomes the New Year. Although there are similarities, something about the sweet, Southern air makes even the most comparable aspects unique. Here are two celebration styles that set Mississippi apart.
Niche Countdown Drops
Every December 31st, towns small and set up celebratory items to lower for the New Year. While some cities use the traditional, sparky ball, others use niche items that are befitting to their area. For example, some coastal towns may use an anchor instead of a ball. Before the drop, locals gather downtown for an evening of music, firework shows and meeting new people. Children’s eyes sparkle with excitement as the . Teens, who are always far too cool to be there, secretly enjoy the scene, keeping just enough distance in between them and their parents. Everyone goes home
Food for a new year
Thanksgiving isn’t the only time that spreads of food are available. Mississippians welcome in the New Year with heaping plates filled with black eyed peas, okra, and rice. These are traditional staples that many believe will benefit you during the year. Most people, however, don’t necessarily believe this, but they do enjoy eating the delicious dinner.
Happy New Year 2026
As the year approaches a swift end and the holiday season slows its exuberant pace, I am reminded that no matter how far I trek from home, the beauty of the holidays paces just right behind me as a constant reminder that Mississippi isn’t just home, it’s a part of why celebrating a New Year is so special to me. Remember: No matter how challenging this year may have been, you (like a true Mississippian) survived it all. Wishing you all a Happy New Year!
