Two outstanding students from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College – Breland Graves and Emily Montgomery – have been selected as 2024 Coca-Cola Academic Team Scholars. Graves earned the prestigious Gold Scholar designation, while Montgomery received the Silver Scholar recognition. Both students are from the Jackson County Campus.
The selection process for the Coca-Cola Scholars program involved evaluating scores earned by students in the All-USA Academic Team competition, which received over 2,200 applications this year. Sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, this program recognizes academic excellence and leadership among community college students nationwide.
As part of their recognition, Graves and Montgomery will each receive a medallion and scholarship through the Coca-Cola Scholars program.

She serves as the director of Public Relations and Communications for the Pi Epsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), historian for the Student Government Association, Public Relations Coordinator for the Campus Activities Board, and Public Relations Officer for the Reflections Team. Additionally, Graves is actively engaged in the Hispanic American Club, Oak Club, and serves as a work study student and student photographer for the Campus Yearbook. Graves expressed her gratitude, stating, “Being chosen for this award is truly an honor. Attending Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has been a life-changing experience and definitely the best choice for me.”

She is also a member of the Reflections Team. Montgomery plans to transfer to Mississippi State University to pursue a degree in Kinesiology with the goal of becoming a physical therapist. Reflecting on her achievement, Montgomery expressed her appreciation, stating, “I am incredibly grateful to have been chosen to receive this generous award! It will definitely help as I continue my education.”
The achievements of Breland Graves and Emily Montgomery highlight the commitment to excellence and academic prowess present at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Their dedication to their studies and involvement in campus activities exemplify the values of leadership and scholarship.
