St. Martin’s 10-run inning in the top of the fifth inning propelled them to a road win against Pascagoula in five innings of Region 7-6A action on Friday night. The 13-1 victory brings both teams to a 1-1 district record.
After two scoreless innings, the Yellow Jackets brought in three runs in the top of the third to grab a 3-0 lead.
Senior Tristen Junkert brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly, and senior Parker Dobson’s two-RBI double brought home the other two runs. Panthers’ senior Angel Sollivan knocked an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the lead to 3-1.
In the top of the fifth inning, St. Martin worked seven walks and knocked five hits, scoring 10 runs. Junior Lake Fincher and sophomore S.P. Stiglets hit back-to-back singles to start off the inning. Freshman Cameron Romero was able to bring in a runner on another single. In their second at-bat of the inning, Fitcher hit a two-RBI double and Stiglets knocked a two-RBI single.
Pascagoula was able to manage two base hits in the bottom of the fifth, but could not answer St. Martin’s fifth-inning rally. The game ended after five innings of play with the Yellow Jackets winning convincingly, 13-1.
In the winning effort, St. Martin’s Tristen Junkert pitched all five innings, tallying five strikeouts while only allowing one run. The pitcher also recorded a single and a sacrifice fly in four plate appearances.
On offense, the Yellow Jackets racked up nine hits. Fincher, Stiglet, and Romero led the way as they all recorded two hits a piece.
The Panthers totaled seven hits, but were only able to bring in one run in the loss. Junior Griffin Wells went two-for-three with two singles, and Angel Sollivan singled in both of his plate appearances while recording an RBI.
“We needed this,” St. Martin head coach, Kary Bridges, said of the win, “We struggled this year, we’re [really] young, just proud of our guys. Tonight, we made pitches and had some great at-bats.”
Pascagoula won the opening game of the series last week 4-2 on the road Tuesday night.
Both the Panthers and the Yellow Jackets had their third and final game of that region opening series stopped Saturday afternoon due to a weather delay. Pascagoula and home-standing SMHS were deadlocked at 3-3 in the fourth frame when the delay came and the contest was postponed to be finished at a later date.
At this point, the game is slated to be completed at some point the last week of the regular season.
