The nation’s oldest singing Christmas tree tradition began at Belhaven University, and this year marks the 93rd performance of the Belhaven University Singing Christmas Tree.
This beloved free event will be held December 5-6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
Since 1933, the Singing Christmas Tree has grown in both size and spectacle. The tree’s frame has become taller, its candles replaced by thousands of shimmering electric lights, and its choir expanded to include more than 100 student singers.
The performance features a dazzling display of synchronized lights that change colors and patterns in time with each carol. Adding to the wonder, Belhaven dance majors appear as angels with illuminated wings during select pieces, creating a visually stunning moment that captures the spirit of Christmas.
This year’s program introduces several new highlights, including a piano and violin duet accompanied by dance to “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” blending instrumental and visual artistry in a moving celebration of the season. Adding a dash of humor and nostalgia, audiences will enjoy a playful performance of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”
“We’re continuing the excitement from last year with new musical selections while preserving the cherished traditions that make this event so meaningful,” said Dr. Rebecca Geihsler-Chittom, chair of the Belhaven Music Department. “The Singing Christmas Tree is our gift to the community—a celebration of faith, artistry, and the joy of the Christmas season.”
Belhaven’s performing arts departments once again join forces with the Singing Christmas Tree choir to tell the story of the Nativity. “This year’s performance highlights the creative collaboration that defines Belhaven,” said Geihsler-Chittom. “From music and dance to theatre, art and design, and creative writing, every discipline contributes to the beauty and depth of this timeless tradition.”
Among the most anticipated moments of the night is the soloist who performs “O Holy Night” from beneath the star at the top of the tree—a role that remains one of the highest honors for any singer.
Adding a sweet local touch, artisan bakery Just Vanilla Bakes will return with a custom dessert inspired by the Belhaven Singing Christmas Tree.
