Inspired by the Seven Climates murals by Walter Inglis Anderson, Dickinson invites collaborators to Ocean Springs each year to improvise together in the Ocean Springs Community Center with the murals as their muse. Dickinson routinely brings in some of the best talent in the industry for this once a year performance. Past guest have included John Medeski of Medeski, Martin and Wood, Nashville studio bassist Dominic Davis who has recently toured with Jack White, and repeat offender legendary New Orleans drummer Johnny “V” Vidacovich.
This year’s show, which will happen on Sunday, September 23rd at the Ocean Springs Community Center will not disappoint on big name talent. Luther has tapped New Orleans heavy weights Kirk Joseph who is the longtime sousaphonist for The Dirty Dozen brass band, Big Sam of Big Sam’s Funky nation, and making his third appearance will be Johnny “V”. Luther has also dug deep into the Mississippi Hills Blues tradition to bring in, Sharde “Fifemastor” Thomas the granddaughter of Blues great Otha Turner. Thomas will be adding vocals along with her handmade fife.
Luther Dickinson was born in western Tennessee to parents Mary Dickinson and famed Memphis producer and musician Jim Dickinson. The family moved to the north Mississippi hill country in 1985, where Luther and his brother Cody grew up going to Jr Kimbrough’s juke joint and Otha Turner’s fife-n-drum goat BBQ picnics.
Luther and his brother, Cody, started the North Mississippi Allstars in 1996, playing Hill Country Blues inspired “Mississippi RocknRoll.” RL Burnside hired him to go on the road in 1997, and he has since toured all over the world from Russia to Japan to Australia.
Special guest will include: Big Sam of Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Kirk Joseph of The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Sharde “Fifemastor” Thomas of The Rising Stars Fife and Drum Band, and as always New Orleans drum legend Johnny “V” Vidacovich and featuring local favorites Blackwater Brass with the Rock U2 dance troupe.
WAMA Marketing and development director Corey Christy believes this year’s event will be the best one yet, “Last year was an amazing experience yet Luther has somehow managed to raise the ante. This year’s line-up is sure to blow your mind”
Tickets are $35 for general admission and $100 for a special VIP experience. VIP tickets will include seating during the concert, an after party with a private performance by Luther Dickinson and open bar at both events. General admission tickets are stand room only and will be cash bar only.
