Many people recognize these lyrics as part of Lauren Daigle’s award-winning song, “You Say,” from Look Up Child, her third studio album. However, fewer people might realize that this album became the highest-charting Christian album from a female artist in over 20 years.
People also may not know that within four years of its radio release on July 9, 2018, “You Say” went platinum X5, selling over 5 million copies across multiple music markets.
Plus, in 2019, it won Song of the Year, and Daigle garnered Artist of the Year at the Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards. “You Say” also won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song, as well as Top Christian Song at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards.
But this song and album are just part of Daigle’s story as a singer and songwriter. Born and raised in Louisiana, music was always a part of her life. In fact, the early “Cajun” musical influences of zydeco and the blues can be distinctly heard in Daigle’s voice and style. But she did not get serious about music until the age of 15, when an illness isolated her from friends and school for two years.
Daigle eventually attended LSU and worked with the choir there before ending up as a contestant on American Idol. Though she did not win, this exposure allowed Daigle to sing with various Christian groups over the next few years.
She released her first full-length album, How Can It Be, in early 2015, earning her a spot as one of Christian music’s breakout artists. That album made it to #1 on Billboard’s Christian Albums chart and into the Top 20 chart of Billboard’s Top Albums. Her awesome music has just kept coming since then, with the two-album release of Lauren Daigle debuting in 2023.
And for Daigle fans, here is some great news: Her 2024 tour – Lauren Daigle, The Kaleidoscope Nights – is coming to Mississippi this weekend, August 16-17.
Actually, Daigle will be performing not once but two times here in the Magnolia State this weekend, with one performance on Friday night in Gautier, and another show on Saturday night in Brandon.
