Gulfport, MS– Ashley Tucker of West Wortham Elementary School, Lester Dempsey of Harrison County Career and Technical Center, and Shelley Silvas of Harrison County School District have been nominated for National Life Group’s 2024-25 LifeChanger of the Year award. Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, LifeChanger of the Year recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 educators and school district employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence, and leadership.
Tucker was nominated by her colleague, Amanda McQueen, for her dedication as a second-grade teacher. She is committed to making each of her students feel loved and valued.
On challenging days, she goes above and beyond to lift their spirits. Her unwavering dedication to nurturing knowledge, sparking imagination, and empowering her students is inspirational.
“She gives endlessly to every child she encounters, whether they’re current students, former students, or simply children she meets in the hall,” McQueen shared.

Dempsey was nominated anonymously for his impact as an engineering teacher. The nominator shared how  Dempsey’s encouragement and guidance helped uncover a hidden talent for CADD engineering, opening doors to new opportunities.
“Mr. Dempsey helped me realize my talent for CADD engineering,” said his nominator. “He supported me in overcoming gender stereotypes and encouraged me to excel. His belief in my potential helped me discover a degree I thrived in, earn my Master’s, and build a successful career.”
Silvas, the District English Learner (EL) Specialist, was nominated anonymously. Her nominator praised for helping students overcome language barriers and navigate the challenges of adapting to a new country and educational system.

Through innovative programs like “Photo Talk Fridays” and ACT Boot Camps, Silvas equips EL students with strategies to succeed academically. She also empowers teachers and parents by organizing professional development, cultural heritage events, and EL Parent Nights, ensuring a supportive environment for all.
    Shelley Silvas
“Ms. Silvas is a friendly face, thoughtful partner, and tireless advocate. Families have called our schools and district office to share how she has transformed their lives. I can think of no more fitting title for her than LifeChanger,” said her nominator.
    About LifeChanger of the Year
Since 2011, LifeChanger of the Year has recognized and rewarded more than 8,500 K-12 teachers, administrators, and school employees in 2,300+ school districts. The program has awarded over $790,000 in cash prizes to winners and their schools for making a significant difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence, and leadership.
Each school year, LifeChanger of the Year receives hundreds of nominations from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Seventeen individual LifeChanger of the Year awards will be given during the 2024-2025 school year.
