Five Ways to Express Gratitude during the Thanksgiving Season

This is the season of gratitude and reflection. Just like the years before, 2024 has come with its own unique challenges. As we draw near to the end of the year and enter into the season of Thanksgiving, we may find ourselves reflecting on all that has occurred during the year. Although silent reflection is great, now is the perfect time to express our gratitude and appreciation. Here are a few ways to celebrate Thanksgiving season this year.

    Volunteer at a Food Bank

Many people do not have family or friends to celebrate with. This may cause them to feel deeply saddened. Volunteering at a food bank isn’t just a way to help feed those who need it, but it’s a great way to uplift someone. Helping others enjoy Thanksgiving dinner is a wonderful way to express gratitude. Search for options to volunteer near you.

    Write a Letter

Writing letters is not as common as it used to be. Why not tap into your inner writer and write a message to a loved one? It can be addressed to your parents, siblings, colleagues, or anyone who has made a positive impact on your life. Receiving letters is a pleasant surprise and one of many ways to show gratitude this season. If you want to get a little more creative, try decorating your letter or purchasing some “thank you” cards with beautiful designs.

    Gift Giving

Who said that we must wait until Christmas to give a gift? While Christmas is right around the corner, do not hesitate to buy a gift for someone special to show them how thankful you are for them. If you spot something that makes you think of a person you are thankful for, buy it and give it to them. The joy on their faces will warm your heart.

    Help a Customer in Need

If you are out shopping and see someone in front of you, do not hesitate to purchase their items if you are able to. The unexpected kind gesture will certainly make their day. The reality is that we never know what someone is dealing with. Even the slightest kind act can possibly restore one’s hope. The next time you are in Corner Market (or any other store) see if there is anyone in front of you that you’re able to assist during the season of thanksgiving.

    Say It

Sometimes, it is good to simply tell someone that you appreciate them. Most people do not hear this often. If you think of someone who has positively impacted your life, reach out to them and let them know how thankful you are for their presence in your life. If you would like to add to this, write down three reasons why you are grateful for them. For example, you can say, “Hi, Dylan. I thought of you and wanted to tell you that I am so grateful for you. You’ve been a listening ear, give wonderful advice, and you always remember special days.” You will be surprised at how much this gesture warms someone’s heart.

    Have a Heart of Gratitude

Whether you speak a kind word or give a gift, no gesture of gratitude goes unnoticed. Regardless of your current circumstance— be it ideal or not— remember that having a heart of gratitude is one of the most powerful perspectives to carry you through the day-to-day challenges of life. One of my favorite quotes about thanksgiving is from author and orator, William Arthur Ward: “Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” How do you plan on expressing gratitude during the Thanksgiving season?
