What living thing in Mississippi is 540 years old, survived hurricanes Camille and Katrina, lived during the arrival of the French Explorer Sieur D’Iberville along with all wars on domestic soil and is still providing shade and beauty to all who walk nearby? Of course, it is a tree, but not just any tree. 

Dr. Andrew Wiest has little left to prove in a nearly four-decade career as a professional military historian.

Wiest, a distinguished professor of history at The University of Southern Mississippi, is the 2026 recipient of the Society for Military History’s prestigious Samuel Eliot Morison Prize, which recognizes a scholar’s “body of contributions in the field of military history, extending over time and reflecting a spectrum of scholarly activity contributing significantly to the field.”

The Science Center for Marine Fisheries (SCEMFIS) is pleased to announce that researchers from NASA’s Earth Science Division have joined SCEMFIS as the latest members of its Industry Advisory Board (IAB). The partnership will create new opportunities to integrate NASA’s Earth observations into future SCEMFIS research, allow for closer collaboration with NASA scientists, and further SCEMFIS’ mission to support groundbreaking marine science research.

Dr. Mark Robertson, a recent graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) School of Polymer Science and Engineering, has been named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Science list for 2026. Robertson is following in the footsteps of his faculty mentor turned business partner, Dr. Zhe Qiang, who was also named to the list in 2022.
