MOSS POINT—The solemnity of the eleventh day of November on the eleventh hour and the eleventh minute is a silence recognized around the globe as a small recognition of the huge thanks offered to Veterans.  Americans honor these heroes on Veterans Day while In the U.K. and other Commonwealth countries, it’s Remembrance Day. In France and Belgium, it’s still called Armistice Day.

There’s something about Mississippi that has always felt like a table big enough for everyone. Whether it’s a church potluck, a backyard barbecue, or a casserole left on a neighbor’s porch after a hard week, food has always been how we show love here. But lately, many of our Mississippi families are quietly facing something that’s hard to imagine—empty shelves and empty stomachs.

Jackson & George Counties, MS — The Jackson-George Regional Library System (JGRLS) is excited to announce the launch of Free Pantries at library branches across the system. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, this new initiative provides community members with access to essential items, reflecting the library’s mission: Inspiring Ideas, Enriching Lives, Building Communities.

When my boys were growing up, there was nothing quite as fun for them as their school’s annual fall festival. It was the perfect time of year for our family and the entire community to come together in celebration of the beautiful autumn weather. They looked forward to playing games of all sorts and winning little prizes. The food and fellowship made each year’s festival even better — especially for me, because I got to see how their classmates grew and changed from year to year.

PASCAGOULA—Everyone knows about the dreaded gift that just doesn’t seem right, but like Ralphie in the bunny suit, there is no getting away without a gracious smile of thanks. But shopping during this year’s Main Street Pascagoula Holiday Open House, merchants are trying to make sure the gift under the tree is exactly the right size, shape and color!

Vardaman, Mississippi, will always be home to me.

Granted, my family only moved there when I was 11 years old, but for me, it is the place where I first learned the meaning of community, and the first place where I felt like a member of a community. My lifelong friendships were forged there during the last, sweet days of my childhood. I also learned the importance of having and being an integral part of a church family back there in Vardaman. And that childhood church home was where I married my husband over 46 years ago.
