PASCAGOULA—Everyone knows about the dreaded gift that just doesn’t seem right, but like Ralphie in the bunny suit, there is no getting away without a gracious smile of thanks. But shopping during this year’s Main Street Pascagoula Holiday Open House, merchants are trying to make sure the gift under the tree is exactly the right size, shape and color!

Vardaman, Mississippi, will always be home to me. 

Granted, my family only moved there when I was 11 years old, but for me, it is the place where I first learned the meaning of community, and the first place where I felt like a member of a community. My lifelong friendships were forged there during the last, sweet days of my childhood. I also learned the importance of having and being an integral part of a church family back there in Vardaman. And that childhood church home was where I married my husband over 46 years ago. 

onstruction formally began today [Oct. 23] on the hotel that will anchor development of the new Crossroads District between the Mississippi State University campus and the city’s Cotton District. Hotel Madelon will be a 122-room Marriott Tribute Portfolio hotel, which will include a full-service restaurant, rooftop bar and dedicated underground parking. The hotel, located at 910 University Dr., is set to open in the summer of 2027. The district it will anchor, including entertainment, restaurant, housing and additional parking venues, will be developed over several phases

There’s something special about fall in Mississippi. The air feels just a little lighter, pumpkins start appearing on porches, and families search for ways to celebrate the season together. In Hattiesburg, one of those traditions is Zoo Boo at the Hattiesburg Zoo. This year, the celebration is getting a magical new twist: Where the Wild Things Glow!

Press Forward Mississippi, in partnership with the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), will host the 2025 Mississippi Community Journalism Workshop on Oct. 30 at the university’s Hattiesburg campus. The workshop is free and open to anyone working to support local news in the state; registration is required.
