Canton Flea Market Returns Thursday, May 11

Once again, the city of Canton will be filled with arts and crafts, talented arts, food vendors, and tons of hospitality as the Canton Flea Market returns this Thursday, May 11. Much to the delight of shoppers and art lovers alike, the market will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Receiving the honor of being a “Top 28 in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society, the Canton Flea Market has an impressive history of supporting the state’s artisans and bringing the highest quality of arts and crafts to eager shoppers twice a year. From its humble beginnings in 1965, the Canton Flea Market has grown into one of the region’s best.

“The Canton Flea Market is Mississippi’s oldest market,” Jo Ann Gordon, director of Canton Convention and Visitors Bureau, explained. “The first market was held in 1965 with 15 artists displaying their artwork on the grounds of the Madison County Courthouse. They would hang their artwork on the fence surrounding the courthouse for visitors and guests to view and purchase. When I came to work here in 1974, artists and artisans would line up outside the fence and we would open the gates and vendors would race inside to claim their spaces on the grounds. But we have a much more organized format and procedure in practice today.”

It’s a blessing that they do because this year the Canton Flea Market will welcome over 900 arts and crafts vendors displaying their work for eager shoppers looking for something special – and just in time for Mother’s Day too.

According to Gordon, items available for purchase will include wall art, yard art, baby clothes, home décor, pottery, jewelry, and “anything else that your little heart could desire.” It’s also worth noting that everything at the market will be handmade and handcrafted.

As for tips on how to approach the big day, Gordon offered a few words of advice for those planning to attend.

“You definitely want to come early and plan to stay late,” Gordon said. “Definitely wear some comfortable shoes and bring a big bottle of water. Also, if you come with others, make sure you have a designated spot to meet at in case you get separated. But I would love to invite everyone to come experience and celebrate the beautiful work of these talented artisans and make sure to pick up a special memento while you’re here.”
