MOSS POINT—Nothing changes if nothing changes. Read that again and understand the meaning behind those five simple words. These words are part of a monthly post encouraging volunteers to be a positive influence in the Moss Point community.
“Be the Change” is not just his daily motto, but it is also in his everyday actions whether he is volunteering for an organization, working within the City of Moss Point, dressing in costume for various holidays or coaching one of many sports for Resurrection Catholic Schools.
Chuck Redmond is a lifelong resident of Moss Point and has spent his professional career working in and around Moss Point. Now that he has retired from the Jackson County Utility Authority after 31 years of service along with serving two terms as an alderman for the City of Moss Point, the thought of just kicking back and relaxing has never crossed his mind. In fact, he is busier now than ever before in his life and is finding new ways to give back to his community.
“My goals in life are simple,” he said. “Just continue to be the best husband, father and grandfather that I can be and continue to be a positive influence in my community.”
And that includes acting as a role model for his granddaughter Khloe. Since 2017, he and his granddaughter have hosted the Be the Change third Saturday cleanup around Moss Point. Each month a different part of the city is identified where special attention should be given, and a variety of volunteers join the effort.
“We choose areas based on the need and the amount of trash in a particular area,” Redmond said. “We are open to cleaning in community areas outside of the city, but we try to stay in Moss Point to instill pride in the community.”
Redmond said that this effort is not only allowing him time with his granddaughter but also teachers her to care for her community. The duo welcomes any volunteers and continues the monthly events no matter the number of volunteers. He also enjoys the support of local businesses who provide water and cleaning supplies for the volunteers.
“My goal for the cleanup is to see it grow through different volunteer groups,” he said. “I would love to see other groups clean on the same day in other areas of the city as well.”
Along with the monthly cleanup events, Redmond and his wife of 32 years, Sonja, and granddaughter Khloe sing together in the choir at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He currently supports Khloe by coaching the cross country, bowling and track teams at Resurrection Catholic High in Pascagoula and also works part time with Moss Point Parks and Recreation. He has one son, Kevin, and two granddaughters, Khloe and Kelis.
