Art students in Mississippi have the opportunity to earn scholarship money for their art work. State Treasurer David McRae has announced  the College Savings Art Contest for 2025. 

Known as the Hillbilly Cat to the King of Rock and Roll, there is without a doubt that our home state boy, Elvis Presley, will forever be an iconic figure.

Hidden in attics, tucked away in our memories and held close to our hearts are pieces of art that changed our lives: children’s books.

It’s a Saturday at the Rock on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). The first half has just ended when you hear that distinct, signature sound – “Ladies and Gentleman, taking the field, it’s your band, The Pride of Mississippi!” In a resonant and commanding voice, Dr. Mike Lopinto heralds the arrival of the beloved marching band and Dixie Darlings.

This interactive event will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the 3D Arts building on the Hattiesburg campus

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) welcomed three-time Grammy-winning blues icon Bobby Rush to campus on Nov. 5 for an exclusive interview, produced by students in the Media and Entertainment Arts program within the School of Media and Communication, as part of its Established Artists and Recording Students (EARS) series.

There is no doubt that Mississippi has greatly influenced the nation and the world as a collective. From athletes to talk show hosts, Mississippi has left its footprint in nearly every sector of the world. One of the ways the Magnolia State has been most influential is in the realm of music. From country, to rock and roll, to classical and every genre in between, Mississippians have solidified themselves as masters of music. 

Downtown Moss Point is yet again decorated to celebrate the fall season and continue a tradition that is now 31 years old – Fall de Rah. Begun in 2003 to engage residents and visitors to the River City, this annual event continues to draw people of all ages to enjoy the decorations spread across public and private locations throughout downtown.

On October 12, high school marching bands from across the state competed at the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) and Mississippi Bandmasters Association (MBA) Regional State Marching Evaluation. This year’s regional evaluations took place at five Mississippi high schools: Region I at Tupelo, Region II at Grenada, Region II at Neshoba Central, Region IV at Pearl, and Region V at Gulfport.

This weekend, students from Union County Schools are excited to present their Fall musical at Magnolia Theatre in New Albany. “High School Musical on Stage!” is based on the 2006 Disney Channel movie, and the storyline of this beloved musical follows Troy, Gabriella, and other students of the fictional East High Wildcats.

Form and space with a recurring theme of nature make up the unique art of the late Walter Anderson. Yet, who was Walter Anderson, and how did he develop this style?

“In order to understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi.” This famous quote is commonly attributed to Mississippi writer, William Faulkner, though it has not been confirmed if he was the one who coined the term. Regardless of who said it, this quote stands true. The Magnolia State is full of rich history.

World-renowned as the “Birthplace of America’s Music,” Mississippi has literally shaped the course of modern music with its contributions to blues, jazz, rock, country, and gospel.

During his freshman year at Mississippi College, Anthony Thaxton was selected to design and produce a poster to promote the Eudora Welty Writers’ Symposium, an annual celebration of the achievements of Southern authors and scholars named in honor of the world-renowned short-story writer, novelist, and photographer.

Music is an integral part of sporting events.  Football has marching bands, ballparks have walk-out theme songs, and most other sports blare hype music, filling the air during breaks in the action. However, the newest trend in athletics entertainment and fan engagement blends the human element with the latest music technology. It brings DJs out of the nightclubs and into the arenas and stadiums.
