The Heart of the Season: Celebrating Giving Tuesday in Moss Point

MOSS POINT—After being thankful for family, friends and food on Thanksgiving, the whirlwind of Black Friday, Shop Small Saturday and Cyber Monday all focus on getting the best deals on gifts or other purchases. But there is one more, less promoted, day on the calendar that is not about buying, but instead, it is about giving.

Since 2012, Giving Tuesday has been gaining momentum globally that has inspired hundreds of millions of people to give and celebrate generosity.  This one day of the year is an opportunity to use your power to support the cause of choice that directly impacts the local community.

Whether you are giving of your time or making a donation, the gesture could create energy in local non-profit organizations.  The best choice for support is an endeavor that parallels individual values.  From purchasing supplies for the local animal shelter, making a donation to a homeless shelter, or supporting backpack buddies, local food and clothing closets, or donating to a local community organization, Giving Tuesday has no price tag or commitment but is a great way to kick off the “giving” holiday season.

Pinky Broussard oversees the backpack buddy program benefiting students in the Moss Point School District.  This program is 100 percent funded through donations from local citizens and area churches and run by volunteers.  Each week, the Moss Point group of volunteers puts together more than 100 bags of non-perishable, easy to prepare food items to be sent home on Fridays with school children.

“Our area churches each collect different items to be used in weekend food bags,” Mrs. Broussard said.  “While we appreciate these weekly donations, donation of funds helps bridge the gap in what we receive and what we spend each week.”

The Moss Point Backpack Buddies, like others across the state, is a non-profit organization where all donations are tax deductible. Donors make one-time gifts of any amount while other donors choose to make a recurring monthly donation.

“Every donation is needed, but becoming a monthly sustainer helps plan for the future,” Mrs. Broussard said, indicating that no amount is too big or too small.

Giving Tuesday is also a great day to review your tax deductions and to determine your current deduction status.  Giving to a non-profit organization may help your bottom line, so be sure to obtain a receipt for your donation. Mother Teresa said, “If you can’t feed 100, then just feed one.” Giving Tuesday exists so that everyone can find an avenue to give back to others. There is a non-profit organization accepting donations that will match the heart of each giver.
