Downtown Moss Point is yet again decorated to celebrate the fall season and continue a tradition that is now 31 years old – Fall de Rah. Begun in 2003 to engage residents and visitors to the River City, this annual event continues to draw people of all ages to enjoy the decorations spread across public and private locations throughout downtown.
Between countless bales of hay and pumpkins, whimsical decorations invite young and old alike to visit and enjoy. As Linda Walsh and Brenda Kay Ramm emphasize, many of these “scenes” are designed to be hands on opportunities, especially for children. Letting kids climb onto and over bales of hay is encouraged and, for many families, has become an annual tradition, many traveling from across the Mississippi Coast and Alabama.
“The sight of mothers and babies taking pictures at the scenes brings a smile to those of us that put this together every year” says Linda Walsh, one of about 20 active members of the Moss Point Celebrations Committee. As Brenda Kay Ramm observed, “This annual celebration has become generational for many families. Our constant is to preserve the remembrance of years gone by and years to come for children and parents.” For both women, the goal is to celebrate the city and have fun!
Many sponsors have supported this effort over the years, with current and continued support from the City of Moss Point and the Moss Point Main Street Program. Along the way, numerous local artists have helped create elements of the scenes that keep growing every year, placed on prominent street corners and greenspaces where visitors can see them up close.
The newest location for this year’s set of scenes is the corner of Dantzler and Main Street where the soon to be opened Sawmill Landing Park is being completed. What a great way to dress up a public space and create appeal as people drive through downtown. Additional Fall de Rah scenes can be found at locations from Dantzler to Bellview Streets.
As in past years, Fall de Rah scenes will remain in place until they are updated for Christmas, ahead of another long-running annual Moss Point tradition – Christmas by the River – held the first weekend in December.
